How do I delete files from my computer without having itunes delete them from my ipod

I apologize if this is a very basic and easily answered question, and I did search the forum to try to find if this was covered somewhere else, but I didn't find anything. Anyway, I did as was instructed by the FAQ on this site(go to ITunes Music folder and delete files there) but the only files that showed up were the ones that were m4a files, which basically was the sum total of one album. Everything I have is mp3. Now, the reason I got an ipod is so I can store these albums that I have and delete them from my computer to free up space. Can someone help me out here? Thanks in advance.

Put the iPod on manually manage songs & playlists (edit>preferences>iPod) and you can just drag the songs onto the iPod. Make sure that you back up your library and not just use only the iPod for storage of the songs. If the iPod fails then you lose the songs. You can see #4 in my sig.

Once you set the iPod to manual don't auto sync it after you have removed the songs from iTunes.
