Unhappy iPod Updater 2005-02-22 killed my mini

Ran it today and just as it was starting up it showed "Firmware update failure. Disk write error."

Great now I get the exclamation folder error. Tried resetting and going into disk mode but still no go. Initiated a repair but apple apparantly charges for repair shipping after 6 months. $30 what's up with that?

Has anyone else gotten this error?

I just updated mine, and so far I haven't gotten this error. But knowing my luck, after posting this reply my ipod will have some unexplainable problems:P

Now, are you repairing by sending it back to Apple or through the Apple Store?

Hope it will all work out:-)

I dunno, would it be better/cheaper to go to the apple store?

I experienced the same exact problem and have not found anything on correcting it. It will kill me to pay support costs because I've only had my iPod for 6 months and it was working fine until I was prompted to run the 02-22 update!

So it isn't just me who has experienced this. Hopefully Apple will address it and offer to pay for shipping costs?

not as disastrous as all that

hey, i just thought i would say someting here, i know this may be irrelevant if you havn't got a second computer or a friend with an Ipod, but i have gotten a firmware error - diskwrite error everytime i have updated my 1st gen mini on my computer, but if you can get onto somebody else's computer then all you have to do is run the updated on their computer...i have done this multiple times on my dad's computer...it wipes your Pod, but if it saves you thirty quid it's worth it for the extra hour you'll spend re-updating it with your tunes.
so don't go giving apple any of your hard earned cash just yet, if you can get on another computer, do it...it fixes mine evrytime, and i DON'T have to give apple any more of my money!

I just got this same exact error. I don't know what happened. Has anyone found a solution to this problem?

Yep, same problem with mine. Actually, mine first started when the songs would just shuffle through and not play but after an update, I got that and now I get iPod service error.

same thing happened to me!

AFter the update, I synced with iTunes and my Mini and my Shuffle stopped working and I got the "unable to write or read to disc" error. I had to delete my iTunes completely from my computer and install an older iTunes without the iPod updater to get my ipods to work. I did go into the apple store and the geniuses restored my pods to original factory settings plus updates first. This had to be done because my PC computer no longer saw my pods. Before doing this, I tried deleting iTunes and doing a clean install with anti-virus software disabled and under a new user account. No go. My pods are only compatible with the older version of iTunes. The geniuses at Apple store said they restored my pods and updated to newest firmware. I don't know if doing this a Mac vs a my PC made the difference.

Solution

Had the same problem. Brought me to the edge of despair.

Solution (YMMV. Disclaimer: Nothing is my fault. Try it at your own risk):
1) Enter disk mode (start up, press center+down when you see the apple logo)
2) Go to explorer/finder/konqueror/whatever and format (not quickformat) your ipod. Say goodbye to your music.
3) Then try to use the updater.

Should work. May suck. Such is life.

sucks does'nt it? if more than one person has this problem you can take it to apple with complaint. for their firmware killing their product. and if they don't do anything someone can sue.

Peeved at Apple

I too updated my mini ipod yesterday and was so peeved I couldn't do anything until tonight, but after following someones suggestion to remove all updates for ipod except for original that came with ipod. I am now happy to say my Ipod and I are one again. All I did was go to Delete/Remove files on my computer and choose to delete all updates for ipod until I got to the original. Plugged in my ipod and it synched right up. Good Luck!!!
