Unhappy iPod - charges but doesn't connect in iTunes

I have had my iPod (4 Gen 20GB) for about a month. When I try connecting it to my PC (WIN XP SP2), iTunes doesn't recognize the iPod. However, the iPod charges . . It also doesn't appear appear as a "hard disk" on the PC. I would use the firewire, but I have no slots. All 6 of my USB 2.0 slots are working fine. I have also tried hooking up the iPod to other PC's, but it does the same thing.

So far, I have re-installed iTunes. I would reformat the HD on the iPod, but am scared that if I do it will erase everything and I wouldn't be able to re-connect using the USB.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Smile RESOLUTION

I was finally able to fix the problem by resetting my iPod.

To reset your iPod (4 Gen)
-----------------------
1. Hold the "Menu" and the "Select" button (white button) for 10 seconds
2. The Apple logo will appear indicating it has been reset
3. Plug in your USB and it should work
