Up until recently I owned a mini ipod and had just under the capacity limit placed in itunes, syncing automatically with the ipod.
I want to buy a 40gb ipod now to store my entire collection on but keep my mini also for things like going to the gym. Trouble is, if I load itunes with my whole cd collection then it will be too big when the mini connects. Is it possible to have 2 versions of itunes (i.e. one for each ipod) on the same computer? Otherwise cn anyone suggest how I can overcome this? Thanks in advance. Paul Last edited by Paulq; 11-22-2004 at 03:48 PM. |

No need for two iTunes installations, you can hook up more than one iPod to the same iTunes Library and have each sync differently as the iPod sync settings are stored on the iPod itself.
Just continue to allow your iPod mini to sync with the 4GB Smart Playlist iTunes created, and you can either have your 40GB iPod sync with your entire iTunes Library automatically or you can set it to "Manually manage music and playlists" and then just drag-and-drop the songs you want from iTunes over onto your new iPod.

Thanks for the reply. This is all very new to me so some help would be really appreciated. Currently everything I have put in iTunes is sitting in the 'library' section so I'm a bit unsure about setting it up to do as you suggest. Am I right in thinking therefore that I can set up a new Smart Playlist and drag all the fils currently in my library into there? Will they all still remain in my library also? Assuming that's correct I can't figure out how to get my mini to sync with this playlist only and not the entire library. Can you give me some tips? Thanks again. Paul |

1. make a playlist (smart or not) containing all the songs you want to be on your Mini (< 3.7 GB)
2. connect your Mini to your computer. Open iTunes preferences, select the iPod tab, and choose "Sync Selected Playlists Only". Choose the one you just made. Now your Mini will only sync with that playlist that is less than 3.7 GB, and your iPod can sync with the whole library. |
