How do I find out what "generation" my iPod is?

Trying to purchase some accessories for my iPod but I can't figure out which generation it is. Is there anything out there that let's me enter my serial to make sure? I bought my iPod used...it's a 40 gig.

When did you get it?

also:

Only the 3rd and 4th generations have a 40 gig capacity.

what does it look like, one click wheel with no extra buttons, or one click wheel with 4 buttons?

4buttons - 3g
no buttons - 4g

the 3G doesn't have a click wheel...it has a touch-sensitive wheel.

Here is a history of the iPod (http://www.ipodlounge.com/articles_m...d=4280_0_8_0_M) also the brand new "Buyer's Guide" has info on this subject (http://www.ipodlounge.com).
