I just got a new 4g 20 GB ipod today and when I connect it to my computer it begins to charge, but it does not show up in "my computer" and none of the programs recognize that I have an iPod connected.
When I go through the steps on the CD, it gets to the configuration step and a screen comes up telling me to plug in my iPod, even though it is pluged in, My computer has windows XP with service pack 2, and I am using USB 2.0 |

Welcome to iPodlounge!
There is a portion of the setup where the iPod display is telling you to plug the iPod into an AC outlet (via the white AC adaptor "brick"). The picture doesn't really make it very clear, so perhaps you mistook it as telling you to plug it into your computer?

This sounds like the same problem I had. When I put the ipod in disk mode it would show up under my computer, but I could not flash the firmware, nor could I transfer songs to it. Guess what I was doing wrong? The Ipod was connected to a USB port on the front of my computer that was only a USB 1.0/1.1 port. Try connecting it to a port on the back of your computer if you havn't already, that solved everything for me.
