iPod Mini's New Menu Button Problem!!!
"Apple Australia iPod mini "Menu Button" Problem", well its not just the Ausies, i have also had the same problem (UK). I got hold of a gold iPod mini which seemed to work fine for 3 or so days. And then on like after the third charge i tryed to light up the back light by holding down the menu key, as you do, and it would'nt work so i pressed and pressed and nothing happend, until the next day when it began to work again. But it was a joke because as soon as i got my hopes up it failed again. The problem with mine was that it would work inconsitantly and so it became a stress to use. I took it back and got a refund, im gunna waite until the next batch comes into the UK some time in oct/sep i recon. What i want to know is how many other people outside outside Australia have this problem with there minis, and if Apple is gunna recognise it as well as the static problem some minis also have?? For ??180 you'd expect the thing to work fine, i hope Apple get onto this! PS as i had mine for only a few days, i left the plastic sticker over the click weel the entire time. Mabie this had somthing to do with it, but if alot of other people in Australia etc, had the same menu key prob then its doubtful!!! I purchased my mini in March with a JQ serial number. I have not had that problem with my mini. Maybe this is another manufacturing problem? Is it under warranty at least?

Im sure this is just a teething problem, and that with the next batch, this and that static problem should be sorted out.

Well, 72 miles and 2.25 hours later, I have a new iPod mini.
The guy I talked to acted like there was no "known" menu button problem. But he was very helpful and friendly. This is my crappy story: Woke up this morning, planned to go to Apple store right away. Left the house, and didn't check the mini. It happened to work fine when I got to the store and the rep took it out of the box. He said there was nothing he could do since it performed fine for him. I was frustrated, but happy that it worked. Halfway home (35 mile trip), I was listening to the mini to make sure it performed fine, the menu button stopped working again. Pulled a U-Turn and flew back to the store. When I walked in, the rep asked if it was acting up again. He looked at it for about 5 seconds and said "Yup, this one's defective". So the Reps do know this is a common problem, and he replaced it (although they didn't have any green mini's left, so I settled for a gold one). I opened the box at the store to make sure it worked. It was fine, but on my way out, there were two girls that were returning what looked to be a 4g 20gb with the menu button problem. Could this be affecting the new 4g series too? I hope not.

I posted the question in the iPod forums. You can access here to see if the 4Gs are having the same issues.

The same thing happened to me when i took mine back to the shop lol, the mini just magically decided to work for the shop staff, but luckly i still got the refund.
I hope this issue snowballs so that Apple take note. The click weel's excellent, as long as works and if the 4Gs got menu button problems or whatever aswell then its definitely a good idea to get onto that one to!! |

Wow, I found what I thought to be the greatest device in the world. Unfortunately I am on my 3rd ipod mini in less then a week. The menu button stopped working on the first one after about three days. The second lasted less then an hour.
If I reconnect the device to my PC it seems to jar it into working. Then it stops again. It's serial number is JQ. I am going to return it to Best Buy and take my chances at the Apple store. Maybe they will be able to find me one that does not have an JQ serial number. Does any one know if the 4G click wheel has been experiencing the same problems? If not I may just go with the fat one. Would be too bad, I really like the mini for the gym. The fat 4G is fine tiill you put a case and a belt clip on it. Then it's big enough to be a hassle. Oh well. wish me luck on #3.JB |

We I just got back from Best Buy where I returned my busted Ipod Mini. This is sad. I never thought that I would get so attached to a device. I already miss it. I am planning on heading over to the Apple store tomorrow to pick up a new one. I do have some concerns. It seems that Best Buy has a more flexible return policy then the Apple Stores. They also offer a warranty for $40 that allows you to exchange it any time within 2 years. They also allow you to return it any time within that 2 year period for any ipod model you want. According to the sales person, if Apple comes out with a new one in the next two you can trade yours in for the new one and get the $250 I Paid credited towards the new purchase. Sounds like a deal and with the problems I have had, I may go for it.
Let me know what you think. I also found this, http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/sho...k+wheel+button Looks like the 4G???s are having the same problems. |

I wouldn't worry about dealing with the Apple store. The guy that I took mine to yesterday said that they have a 14 day defect replacement period. If its defective, within 14 days of purchase, they swap it for a brand new iPod (what happened to me).
If it is after the 14 day period, they "repair" it. He said Apple's policy with the mini is pretty much not to repair any mini. So in other words, the "repair" is a replacement of a new mini. That's how my local Apple store (near Detroit) is handling all warranty issues.

Does anyone know what the serial numbers were of the early Ipod mini's? I really want to get another one and I would like to know which batch I should look for or avoid. After having two bad ones, I really don't want to go through this again. The serial number of both the units I had started with 'JQ'.
Thanks, JB |

I really think its a hit or miss type of thing. There are many people with JQ #'s that have working units. The new one I picked up works flawlessly so far, and has a JQ serial number, as did the one that didn't work.

I am losing faith in these minis. I have the same scroll wheel issue. Press the Menu and then you have one second to use the scrool wheel. Touch it and it works as long as you don't remove your finger. Remove it for two seconds and it locks again. Press the Menu again, or turn Hold on/off, and you have another one second window.
Got mine replaced for this issue...got the new one....it worked for about 5 hours....now does the same thing. Are the techs at Apple asleep at the wheel (pardon the pun)?! I went to the "Genius Bar" at the Apple story, and they were stumped. Said to get it replaced again. $40 s&h. That is crap. This is a sw issue that they should fix. I'll be looking at the new Sony soon. 30 hours of battery life. bodybld@hotmail.com |

This whole issues a joke, for the money you pay for the ipod mini, it should work 100% of the time with no bs like the button and sound static issues, this would be expected with cheaper mp3s but even then all the ones iv seen have had no problems like the apple ipods. Apple take the #### and this issue should be the new "ipods dirty secret". I hope apple get there act together as ipod and ipod mini are excellent, as long as they work that is!
