Well you lost your 'AC Brick' for whatever reasion!!!
There arn't to manny options left to you, but to use FireWire 400 If your on PC this most likely means that you need to get a FireWire 400 PCI Card. Some OEM's HP, Dell might already have one on them, but it's not going to be as common as USB.
As for what a FireWire Card goes for??? I wouldn't know try www.google.com ...

Otherwise I think www.apple.com sell replacement 'Bricks' for $49.00(USD)...

Or if you're using USB2 you can just borrow the AC adapter from a friend whenever you update the firmware, but charge from USB2 for normal use.

Got it on eBay with no accessories guys. Or am that guy that jacked your iPod in Brooklyn? The world may never know.

Anyway, I have a 3rd gen coming with all accessories but I didn't feel like waiting 4 days to use the iPod that took me a weekend taking apart and working on to use it. I don't have any clsoe friends with an iPod either so that was out.

Alright well I guess we can end this now since there is no way to do it. I figured there was no way but i was just curious if anyone had a trick for those without the brick.

Thanks for the help.

You can it's called a FireWire PCI Card!

You can charge any iPod with an avalible FireWire Port, your comming 3G as mostlikey sold will also need a FireWire Card aswell. While it's true that you can Sync useing the USB, you're going to need to purchase another Cable (FireWire - USB: to Dock), in order to do so. My local Apple Store sells this 'Cable' for exactly ???18.00(EUR). If you keep looking on eBay I'm sure you can find a FireWire Card for less then ???18.00(EUR).

Ok I thought it was implied that you needed a FireWire for 2G-3G and below. If you had a FireWire 400 PCI Card (or an on-Board varient thereof). You could Update and or Restore. in either case you'd be asked to disconnect the iPod from the Computer and after the reboot to reconnect back to the PC / Addapter to finnish the iPod OS install.

In affect the only People who'd have to worry about connecting to any addapter when doing an Update & Restore are those whod insist on useing USB2.0. Given the 3G can Sync off an USB Hub it can NOT charge from it (only Minis and 4G's seemingly have this abbility even if it is true it can not be good on the Batterie as USB can only supply a +5V to any One thing at any One Time where as FireWire can power mutiple Devices at +12V and the iPod just happens to needs a +12V power souce to charge. USB can not even hope to pump out even half that much.

BTW: like I said your goning to have to invest in a FireWire Card if you want to use that older iPod. As you may allready know i'm sure the 3G+ iPod's all have a Dock So even if you could use the 'Brick' (and you can!), youd still need to buy a standerd 6 - 6 FireWire Cable. As the Cable that's comming with your 3G is a FireWire (Brick) to Dock (iPod) Cable.

I hope I better answerd your question now...

I have a Belkin 3 port card already. I figured that was implied. I know what a firewire card is and how it works but thanks anyway.

The problem with using the firewire card to flash the firmware is while it is trying to flash it will be loading to sync. I think this is why they say to plug it into an ac outlet so it can do it cleanly without interuptions.

lol

All I can say is I never had your problem I recently went on a Restoreing spree (Between Linux and Windows), trying to remove that much beloved Volume Cap! >
The only time my 15Gb iPod tryed to do anything was after the Restrore was finnished.

Ofcourse I was not runnining iTunes (or your faveroite Software here!), at the time, just the Update & Restore. I had to force eject the iPod (at times), and let it boot up. When I got the '<-Dock' Icon I just reset the iPod in it's Dock and it did it's bussness. At which point iTunes was launched. I can't recall ever having to connect any of my G1's or my G3 to any AC to install any iPod OS (i.e. Firmware).

Do you have a friend with a mac? You can update the firmware thru a mac by connecting, then unmounting it but leaving it plugged in to the firewire port.
