iPod mini only briefly displaying on desktop in OSX

I'm using OSX 10.3.5 and have downloaded and installed all the ipod updates. My ipod icon display briefly on the desktop and is shown in iTunes, so I don't have any issues installing songs or data.

The ipod mini is brand new.

Where i come unstuck is when i try and use programs to view what's on my ipod.

The icon mounts on the desktop briefly as iTunes synchs, turns into a folder and then disappears.

I've restored data and plugged and unplugged the ipod. I'm using the FireWire connection but have the same issue with the USB one.

Anyone got any clues please?

Think I worked iit out. I turned off the option that automatically opened ITunes when i plug in.
