I'm having the same problem.

Here's what happened...

I had my ipod connected to my machine and was using the windows "search" function under the start menu when I noticed that it had found my ipod and was searching it for the file I was looking for on my hard drive. So I killed the search.

Ever since then neither of my iPods can be found by iTunes or iPod updater (I get the message "iPod cant mount" or whatever.

Now both iPods are readily recognized by the system (XP Pro, SP2) as external hard drives connected through firewire. However, iTunes and the Updater won't find them at all.

I've tried all the usualy things... uninstalled and re-installed, re-formatted the iPods, did a repair install of XP but nothing will work. They are easily found by iTunes on my work laptop.

My thoughts are that now my home computer recognizes them as hard drives but not iPods. There must be a registry value somewhere that is not set correctly.

They are showing up as Apple Computer_Inc iPod IEEE SBP2 Device under my Device Manager under Disk Drives.

Any Ideas Anyone??? Please help!

Any ideas anyone?

OK another won't mount problem, or rather won't even be seen on Windows over Firewire, before I go any further, this all works fine under USB2.0 on the same machine !!

4G 40Gb iPod
iTunes 4.7
Latest updator
A7N8X Deluxe mobo with 6 pin firewire card plugged in (it's onboard
1394)
Latest drivers installed
Windows XP Pro SP2

My problem is that windows isn't even recognising that anything is connected, the iPod starts to charge over firewire but the computer doesn't recognise it at all

Any ideas ? As I say it's all fine using USB2 on the same machine.

Cheers !

change port on firewire card?

I've found success in fixing my problem by restarting and choosing a different port on my 3-port Belkin firewire card. The center port seems to work fine.

I had tried everything including clean installs, IRQ checks, everything. This seems to work . . . for now.

Same for me... I was using usb and Windows XP.
I was stressing when it didn't seem to recognize the ipod, and I couldn't disconnect it without it being safe, but as it wasn't registering, it wasn't going to become 'safe'... anyway I just "removed hardware safely" (in toolbar in Windows).
Then I reset it, and turned off and back on the computer, and was fine.

I have exactly the same problem.

I need a program that will format the ipod, not through the restore facility as it won't mount through that, so its not even worth trying!

I need something to fix this pretty quick!

IPOD won't mount

I have read all the responces to this topic and I have the same issue. My ipod will not be recognised by the itunes. The message says it is a software issue and to reinstall. I have done this over seven times. I installed the ipod on another computer and it works fine. It just will not work on my home computer. I was using usb and Windows XP. I have tried all solutions except reinstalling Windows XP.
I can not seem to get my ipod to reset. I have been working on this for at least 12 hours over three days and I am not close to a break through. I tried to change the source of my itunes and that did not work. The itunes reside on the c drive, Programs, itunes file. Can anyone assist.

This is not a software problem! I have 3 USB ports and 2 firewire. Some work, some don't.

You need to try different ports.

Found solution (duh!)

OK, I finally found a solution for my iPod and it took several days for me to find it.

What had happened was that my iPod was showing up as my c: drive (since I have a RAID array at g: as my boot disk) and iTunes will not recognize anything at c:. Once I changed the drive letter then everything worked.

I think that my problem started when my computer started searching the iPod as a drive when using the Search feature under the Start menu.

Here's where I found some good tips from someone on the Apple iPod board:

http://www.kelleytown.com/ikelleytown.htm#how

On the USB issues that other have been experiencing, I've seen USB devices (not just iPods) act weird on different machines. Sometimes all it takes is using a powered USB hub and sometimes it's as simple as changing ports to get something to work. For example - my iPod connects fine with USB 1.1 on my work laptop (and I have a powered hub - don't know if that's a coincidence...)

I contacted HP and them fixed the problem. My ipod work fin now. I backed up my music first mto avoid loosing any thing. Then followed the following: Removing iTunes For Windows
Learn how to uninstall iTunes from your Windows PC.

To remove iTunes from your Windows-compatible computer:

Click Start and point to Control Panels.

In Control Panels, open Add or Remove Programs.

Select "iTunes" from the list of currently installed programs, then click Change/Remove. An iTunes for Windows InstallShield window appears.

Click Remove.

Click Next. A Confirm Uninstall window appears.

Click OK. An iTunes for Windows InstallShield window appears. It says, "Maintenance Successful. Setup has completed maintenance on iTunes."

Make sure "Yes, I want to restart my computer now." is selected.

Click Finish. Your computer restarts.

Delete these folders by dragging their icons to the Recycle Bin:

C:\Program Files\iTunes

C:\Program Files\iPod\bin

Note: If you are unable to move the C:\Program Files\iPod\bin folder to the Recycle Bin, see the iPodService.exe Alert section below.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Click Start and point to Turn Off Computer.

Click Restart.

Note: Songs you purchased from the iTunes Music Store or imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default.

iPodService.exe Alert

Follow these steps if the message, "Cannot delete iPodService.exe: It is being used by another person or program." appears when you try to delete the iPod folder.

Make sure the iPod Updater utility is not open.

Right-click the My Computer icon and choose Manage from the shortcut menu. A Computer Management window appears.

Click Services and Applications from the list on the left side of the window.

Click Services.

Locate the iPod Service in the list.

Right-click the iPod Service and choose Stop from the shortcut menu.

Quit Computer Management.

Then reinstall ipod and load music folder from saved location.

I have a Gigabyte GA-8PE667 Ultra2 motherboard with an Intel 845PE chipset (I assume that's the chipset responsible for USB). It has 6 USB 2.0 ports and I can confirm high-speed USB devices work on them all.

When connecting my iPod to the rear USB port the ipod enters a constant loop of connecting and disconnecting and in a period of 10 minutes over 60 events were logged in Event Viewer that were a combination of these two messages (mostly the latter):

Quote:
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation.
Quote:
Timed out sending notification of device interface change to window of "iPodManagerWndV2"
If I plug the iPod into the front USB port (by cable) it connects and disconnects for about 2 or 3 minutes before it remains connected and only connects at 1.1 speeds (it is definitely a 2.0 USB port). The same two error messages are logged about 10 times.

I've been sitting on this problem for a while as once I transfered my songs to the iPod the first time I haven't plugged it into my PC since.

It seems like the only option I have is to purchase a FireWire card and hope I don't waste my money. It seems stupid that I should need to buy a firewire card for only one device which is supposed to be USB compatiable anyway.

Apple replaced my busted ipod, but the new one won't connect

I noticed yesterday morning that my 4G 40gig ipod, though working fine (via firewire and windows 2000), had this weird rattle, went to the apple store, and they gave me a new ipod.

here's what happened next: i charged the new ipod overnite, this morning connected it to my computer, and i got a message saying i needed to update the ipod before itunes would play nice with it. so i launched the ipod updater (1/11/05 or something like that), and it didn't indicate that i had an ipod connected. then i wiggled the firewire connecter on the computer end, and it recognized the ipod, so i clicked on 'update.' at almost exactly the same time, i got a message from windows that said new hardware recognized, do you want to restart. i said no, and let the ipod update finish, then restarted.

upon restart, i got another message saying i needed to update my ipod. so i updated again, and restarted. same thing again. so i click on 'my computer' and see that my machine (running w2k) doesn't recognize my ipod as an ipod, but as a generic F drive. device manager tells me that my ipod is a generic removable storage device.

I had a similar problem when i first started using my original ipod, until i switched from USB to FW. i have this suspicion that i had to do with connecting my ipod before i installed the software (idiot), that maybe windows decided to use the wrong driver or something.

so i have a brand spankin' new ipod that won't talk to my computer. first thing this evening, i'll double check that my FW card is properly stuck in its slot. but i don't know what to do next. pretty sure it involves undoing something, but what?

You've described the exact same behaviour I experianced when plugging my iPod in for the first time (through USB). Windows installs device and prompts to restart when I went to update. After restarting it want's to install the update again. This has happened on two different iPods. The last time I downloaded the latest update from the apple site and installed it. Again, after a reboot it wanted to update the iPod again. I cancelled it.

How is the iPod meant to appear in device manager? For myself it appears as 'Storage Volume > Generic Volume' and 'Disk dives > Apple iPod USB Device'.

I'm sorry I plugged in my iPod to check this, now. It's dropping in and out so fast I can't unmount it safely. iTunes has frozen and won't release it. Grrrr... I hate you iPod!!!

Hi,

I have a WinXP SP1 box and have been using the onboard Firewire which is on my A8V Deluxe and recently my iPod refused to mount in that when connected it would freeze the PC completely and cause a BSOD and loads of errors in the Error Log.

It's been a nightmare to diagnose but I've eventually put the problem down to upgraded Via drivers (which I updated to combat another problem), downgrading from 455 to 453 solved my firewire problem

So some advice to others, check your mobo drivers as well as the drivers for the induvidual cards

Hi Guys.

I've got the same symptoms as listed above with my 3g 15gb ipod using Win XP. The computer recognises the ipod whether i connect through USB of Firewire however Itunes will not. When i try updater it tells me that it cannot work as other ipod applications are running' (they are not!) also i sometimes get the messages 'can't mount ipod'

Now having read through this thread i notice that my Hard Drive is listed as H: on the Shuttle PC and, when connected, my ipod is showing as C;

Can anybody confirm that changing the Hard Drive to C: will work????

Also, how do i do this, will it require a complete install? if so thats going to be a major problem as i've not got my XP CD here with me (plus i've got a crap load of stuff to reinstall afterward? What is the easiest method of changing my HD letter from H: to C:

Thanks
