Little odds and ends I've notcied about the 4G

Well,I am on my second 4G. I hope this one works, although if I had known Apple had plans to release a new firmware I may have waited to see if that fixed my problems. I know Apple is very secretive but if they know that 4G ipods are buggy and that people may be returning them..maybe let us kow you are working on the problems.

Anyway....some things I've notcied about the 4G:

Music seems to load slower. On my 3G what would take 3 seconds to load now takes 4 or 5 seconds. Not a big deal at all but it does seem to be a tic slower.

The scroll seems to be more jumpy. On long song titles the side to side motion doesn't seem as crisp as on the 3G. Again, not a big deal.

When the ipod is off and charging and on hold the little lock no longer appears...on my 3G it did.

when I plug my 4G into my PC it takes FOREVER for itunes to recognize. it took 3-10 seconds for my 3G to pop up but my 4G is like 10-20 seconds...or longer.

None of these things are a big deal but I am curious if others have noticed these things.

I never had a 3g, but I did notice that it takes forever for windows to recognize my pod (4g).

When I have my hold button on the little lock thing shows up on my ipod. Also it seems that the music does load a little slower but its not big deal.

Well, I don't have a 4g, but a 3g. Basically the iTunes sync just isn't nearly as solid on Windows as it is on OS X. If my iTunes app doesn't recognize my iPod within 5 or 10 seconds, it usually isn't going to, and I have to disconnect it and reconnect it with "Safely Remove Hardware" at least a couple times. Can be irritating. So it's not only a problem with 4gs, rather a problem with Windows being a pain in the butt and iTunes not so seamlessly integrated into the OS as it is in OS X.

However, most times it's not a problem. It really only seems to act funky after my computer has been on for an extended period of time (8+ hours) with users having been switched around. Something about user switching I think is what throws it off.

I use XP and I never had a problem with it recognizing my 3G..or my gf's 3G. But the 4G,I too find myself having to do it 2 or 3 times before a connection is made.

I too find the loading time is slow on windows with my 4g. I plug it in, windows recognizes it right away, but itunes hangs, and then takes a little siesta, and then starts updating. Its actually fairly irritating how long it takes

I too had some probs. with the 4G. There was a post in the windows section of this forum that helped me big time. It had a link to a window update for firewire cards. Aparrently there is an issue with Windows not being able to "enumerate". Not sure what it means but after I did the update my iPod worked just fine.
Before it would lock up the iPod and iTunes would never see the iPod. Although it would see my 3G iPod with now problems before the update. So I knew it was something with the 4G. Also the new Firmware deals with firecard chip issues.

So look for that link and you should be golden.

I don't know what you're all talking about... I've had my 4G iPod for a few weeks and so far it's only been a good experience... everything has been great, no problems whatsoever. There were one or two kinks when I first tried to upload my music (Windows identified the iPod as a USB drive rather than letting iTunes pick it up, but that's a Windows problem), but otherwise everything has been 100% great.

I've heard that when you use a Mac it takes no time at all which is driving me to get a Powerbook. Is this true?

So far my second 4G is working ok. Most of the 'issues' are just little quirks/differences and not really 'problems'. The only thing is it does take my windows itunes a few seconds longer to recognize my ipod and loading music takes longer than it did on my 3G. When I say 'longer' I'm talking 3 seconds (3G) vs 6 seconds (4G).
My first 4G haad the orignal firmware and my new one has the most recent update, not sure if that is the reason my new one is working (so far).

One thing about the 4G's..the bugs had me so freaked out I spent $65 on a Circuit City plan so I'm covered past 30 days. I would never do that with any other product but with these new ipods it was worth the peace of mind.

I don't remember 100% exactly since it was a few weeks ago, but basically what I did was I opened up explorer, right-clicked on the ipod drive under "My Computer", and clicked something like 'eject'. Effectively this unmounted the drive so that I could disconnect it. Then I re-connected it to the computer, with iTunes open, and waited for about 5 minutes (I guess it took a long time for iTunes to recognize it because I was using usb 1.1 instead of 2.0 or firewire), and then a dialogue came up in iTunes that asked what I wanted to name my iPod, and then it started transferring my music...
