Unhappy Connecting and disconnectiong iPod

Should the iPod continually connect and disconnect as you are trying to transfer music to it, i manage to transfer some 100 songs then it feels like disconnecting for some strange reason without me touching my pc or the iPod?

I then get a message saying update complete when i still have hundreds of songs in my library waiting to be transferred . its uploads some songs then starts to slow down in transfer speed and stops again then when it starts to transfer again it hasn't transferred the songs from the previous time so it is continually trying to transfer the same portion of my file list over and over again

I have a 4G 40GB iPod Windows XP, using USB 2.0, Itunes 4.6 and update is 3.0(2004-07-15)

thx
