1. Delete songs you don't listen to anymore.

Filled to the Brim - What to Do - What to Do

Well, for me- it was easy - bought a 40 G 4g . Didn't eat for a couple of weeks, but now I have my 40 G 3g - all jazz, rock, pop, blues, etc. on one and all my Classical on the other (ripped at 256). Still have about 10 gigs to play with , but that will go within 4 or 5 months. And still leaves about 14,000 tracks not able to fit - got a lot of music and collecting for a LONG time.

re: Filled to the Brim - What to Do - What to Do?

I just checked in to see if there is anything that I can do about this very subject.....

I have a Classic 160GB, and it is almost full too! Last update revealed less than 1GB remaining, which is not a lot of leeway.

As Apple do not makle a larger-than-160GB Classic, I am faced with the daunting task of making a selection of tracks to delete from my 27,000 odd.

I am not looking forward to this at all, as I like all my tracks, which range all the way from Classical to Headbanging and Psy-trance. This is quite apart from the sheer amount of effort and time involved.

Guess I had just better stop collecting any more music....

John

(PS: I also have a 120GB Classic, and it's full, too......)

As the owner of iPod classics, I have this to say:

Smart Playlists. They take a few seconds to setup and automatically organize music. I can also confirm that no one needs to carry around 20,000+ songs. I used to think that I did but it would take months to listen to it all. Sure, the ability to have access to all those songs at the push of a button is nice but it isn't completely necessary especially when people really only need a couple thousand tracks maximum. That's enough to last for over two straight weeks of listening.

8-1/2 years ... Congrats, I think that's the oldest thread resurrection I think I've seen ;-)

But the issue is still relevant, and kornchild is correct. Unless you travel for weeks on end and can't re-sync, there's rarely a need to have all your music at your fingertips. Setting up a series of playlists to select and manage your music for you does wonders to put the music you are mostly likely to want on your iPod, on your iPod.

For example, I have a large library and listen to a variety of music. For my 64 GB devices I use a series of playlists to select and rotate the music from my library based on rating and date played. In general, when a song is played it will be removed from the device on the next sync and replaced by another, and eligible to get re-sync'd again in a few weeks. For example:

- Smart playlists for 3, 4, & 5 star songs, all limited to a few GB in increasing sizes by rating.

- Plus, smart playlists of specific artists that are my favorites which didn't get selected (also limited).

- Plus, smart playlists to emphasize certain genres that are proportionally smaller than others in my library.

- Plus, regular playlists of new (or temporary) items that I don't want rotated out when played.

All of these are summed up and sync'd to my devices. True, I may not have a particular song I want to hear at any moment, but I've gotten less impulsive over the years ;-)
