I can't remember where I was looking but I read somewhere that defragmentating your iPod hardrive will make it run better. Is this true?
I just ordered my 4G 40 gig iPod a couple of days ago, and it should arrive tomorrow, hopefully. ![]() I just want to know, becuase I don't want to go deframentating my iPod HD, then the whole thing is screwed. Also, while we are in the topic, feel free to leave me some general hints and tips on iPod use/care. I am running Windows XP Pro. Thanks Loads! |

I've never defragmented my iPod mini drive, so I'm not sure if you really need to.

I've defragged my 20gb 3rd gen once, didn't notice any performance change, and it took absolutely ages (about 3 hours I think!)

No, don't defrag your hard drive. Use the iPod Updater that came with it, and make sure that all the music is backed up on the computer somewhere, then click restore and it will wipe the hard drive, then just load all the songs back on.
You aren't meant to defrag the hard drive, Apple actually discourages it. |

Yep, an occasional restore is all I've done to defrag. It's largely unnecessary as the number of fragmented files should stay largely static (you'll be pulling off roughly the same amount of files as you are replacing on any particular update).

Are you using FAT32 or HFS?
But anyway you see it, unless you delete and add so many songs, you have no need to defrag this drive. In fact, I would do a restore over defrag, since that is much faster (restore then adding songs) and less strenuous on the HDD.
