4 gen iPod, fast forward not working !!!!!

I just got my 4rth gen 40 gb ipod and there seems to be a problem.

I cant fast forward or rewind by holding the next/previous buttons like I use to do with my 2nd gen ipod.

According to the getting started document included with the new ipod this should be possible ?

Anyone know anything about this issue?

(PS I know how to skip to any part of a song)

It really hasn't changed since 2G. I smell a defect. Exchange.

No. He's kidding...

I don't know what's up with that. As for skipping to any part in the song, as the song is playing, push the center button, and then use the scroll wheel.

I have that exact same problem!

Every time it happens, I have to restart the iPod (Quite annoying)!

I hope Apple fixes this soon.

Well, there are two ways to shuttle back and forth WITHIN a song. One way is to press the Select button when you're in the Now Playing screen and "scrub" with the wheel. The second way is to hold down the forward and rewind buttons on the iPod. If you just press and let go forward or rewind, though, you will skip to another song or rewind to the beginning.

If by pressing and holding the button does not "scrub" a song, do a factory restore. If it still doesn't work, send it back to Apple.

Well, I restored my iPod to factory condition and then transfered my music to the iPod again.

Then suddanly I can fast forward again !

But not for long.

After a few hours I cant fast forward using the Next/previous buttons now I hold the button and nothing happens, but when I release the button it skipps to the next song.

And just to clear things up.

When use press the next button for example the ipod should start the next song (like mine does just fine).

But when you hold the next button for a few seconds it should fast forward within that song and not skip to the next song (this feature does not work for me)

It could be that the button mechanism is loose, not making good contact, possibly from the warming up of the case from extended use. Call Apple.

Nope, most likely not mechanical.

I reset my ipod
"
Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons until the Apple/iPod logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step."
(4rth gen iPods)

And now it works perfectly.

If it was a mechanical problem it wold not have been fixed with a reset.
