Unhappy ipod formatted on PC will not be recognized on MAC

Sorry if this topic has been covered before, i may not have searched with the right terms.

Anyway, a friend got me a new Ipod, it looks and sounds great. I formatted it on my PC. I am running Windows XP Pro, completely updated and patched. Unfortunately, i had MACDRIVE installed on my machine when i put on the Ipod, and i got one warning about that (saying that Macdrive could not recognize the new system), but then i removed that program, and everything seemed to be working OK.

I skipped the section asking if i wanted to setup my iPod, as i wanted to remove the program mentioned above prior to setting it up. Using Itunes, I have named the iPod and registered it.

I have successfully moved 2 albums to my iPod, it works well with my Windows PC.

The problem, though, is this. My friend has a brand new iBook G4 with MAC OSX (never been on the internet - so no updates). When i connect to his machine to share some tunes, the first thing that the G4 does is ask to update the iPod with software. If we accept that option, we get the spinning wheel hold button and nothing happens (we have waited as long as 10 min). If we cancel, the itunes on the mac recognizes the iPod, but then does not allow us to add songs.

Help?

thanks
matt
