Transfer Speed Tests

I did some tests last night on the different transfer speeds for dragging and dropping files to iPod.

System is as follows [picture attached]

Shuttle SB51G XPC Chassis/51G M/B
P4 2.8GHz 533 CPU
1024MB PC2700 RAM
80GB HDD
On-board USB2 [Rear panel]
On-board FW [6-pin, powered ports] [Front panel]

other not so relevant stuff:
ATi Radeon 9800 128MB VGA
Samsung 52x24x52x16 CDRW/DVD Combo Drive
CMV 17" LCD Monitor
MS Wireless KB and Mouse.

Running Windows XP Home, SP1
---------------------------------------------------------

So, what i did was time [using a stopwatch] the time it took to move a folder 3.54 GB (3,802,206,684 bytes) [on disk] in size from the C:\ to the iPod drive, by dragging and dropping, ie: had one window opened to the C:\, and one opened to the I:\, and right-clicked-and-dragged, then selected copy here.

I started the stopwatch as i pressed copy here, but it came up with a warning about encrypted files being copied, so i reset it, and started it again when i clicked yes.

After it was copied, and the time recorded, i then highlighted the folder in the i:\ and pressed shift-delete, then started the timer when i clicked yes.

The folder has various types of files inside, including: .zip, .exe, .mp3, .m4a, .gif, .jpeg, .mpeg, .avi, .bmp, .psd and quite a few others.

I did Firewire first, then USB 2, using the same folder to move, in the exact same fashion.

Here are the results [times are in minutes:seconds]:

---------------------------------------------------------
FireWire:
Transfer Size: 3.54 GB (3,802,206,684 bytes)
Time to Transfer: 5:37
Time to Delete: 0:22

USB 2.0:
Transfer Size: 3.54 GB (3,802,206,684 bytes)
Time to Transfer: 4:32
Time to Delete: 0:15
---------------------------------------------------------

So, i think i'm going to be sticking with USB2 for now, I will test the transfer speeds in iTunes when i have enough music to transfer.

Peace Out

I think iTunes will transfer faster with Fire Wire as some websites have tested the syncing speeds as well. I will post the links later to show you their tests. So far they match up, the data is sent faster through USB 2.0 put when downloading songs Fire Wire is faster.

Just tested it through iTunes:

Used only .m4a files, simple drag and drop in iTunes from library to iPod

Results:

USB2: 22 seconds
FW: 27 seconds

How exactly did you put a 9800 int hat shuttle box? I've heard people had overheating issues while using such a high performing card. Most people just stick a ti4600 or something.
