Ipod not detected by computer but can be charged by charger

My ipod (160 classic) is no longer being detected by itunes or my computer. I plug it in with the USB port and nothing happens - it doesn't even show as connected or charge. I've tried changing the USB port but none of them work for this (I've tested them with other devices, and all the ports work with other ones). However, I also own a Belkin charging port that I plug in, and that still charges it with the same cord that won't connect with the port. Replacing the cord didn't work.

I want to get my new music on my ipod, but I honestly have no idea what to do.

Apple has help on this of course: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204095

Sometimes a computer reboot helps. Have you tried a different computer, you don't even need iTunes installed on it. The iPod should show up as a drive in Windows.

See if the Apple suggestions help too.

Have you backed up your iTunes Library this week? If not, you are risking losing your music and playlists....

I'll try it on my laptop and see.

I have no less than three backups of my music library, but thanks for the reminder. (One "near loss of all my data" scare was enough.)

The backup reminder is my standard signature.

Maybe I should change the font so it is more obvious it is a signature...
