songs out of order on ipod

For several albums, the songs appear out of order on my iPod, even though they're in the correct order on iTunes. I've found other threads where people have the same problem, but I can't seem to find a solution that works for me. Does anybody know how I can fix this? It's extremely frustrating.

Make sure the track tag information is correct for all the songs. This includes the "track number" and "track number of" fields along with artist, album artist, and album title.

Are these songs in a playlist? If so, in iTunes right click the playlist name and choose Copy To Play Order.
Sync.

Check the iPod to see if it is fixed.

Did you edit the track tag information of these songs before or after you synced? I suggest deleting the songs from the iPod (if you are using manual syncing) or restoring the iPod (if you are using auto-sync, this will also erase everything on the iPod). Then re-sync everything back over in your iTunes library or just those problematic albums.

You also never specified what iPod you have. I assume it's an iPod classic since you posted here in this section of the forums. You should also let us know what generation it is along with the iPod's capacity.

I didn't edit the track tag information.

I had already tried deleting and re-adding. At first, everything was on in the proper order. But then the last time I synced my iPod, it once again reordered the tracks on albums, moving seemingly random songs to the beginning.

It's a classic. Not sure of the generation or capacity at the moment; I'll check later.

Well, you should double-check to make sure the track tags are all correct. Like I said, try restoring the iPod and syncing everything back over if simply deleting and re-syncing didn't work.

The track tags are definitely all correct, at least as far as I can tell. In iTunes, everything is in order and seems 100% OK. It's only on the iPod that tracks appear out of order. (And I did restore and re-sync last time.)

Are they MP3 files?

If so, then you may need to select them in iTunes, right click one of them and choose Convert ID3 and use version 2.3. This will write out the iTunes information into the MP3 files. Remove the songs from the iPod and re-add.

They're not MP3s. I think in most cases, they're ripped directly from CDs to iTunes.

Then the tag information in the GetInfo window is the culprit.

The artists could be different as could the album name. Subtle things like extra spaces and odd punctuation need to be checked. The track # of # could also be a cause.

I just checked the tags for one of the albums that has a song out of order, and I can't find any difference between the out-of-order song and the other songs aside from the song titles and track numbers. Everything seems to be in order on iTunes.

I think you are missing track numbers then. Track sorting on iPod classic | iLounge Article

I checked, and that's not it either. All of the track information on iTunes is correct (and presumably always has been, as I haven't changed anything since originally ripping these CDs).

Just to clarify: these albums used to be displayed correctly on my iPod, but the track order changed when I synced on subsequent occasions. Somehow, without any of the information changing on iTunes, the iPod mixed up information that used to be correct.
