80gb iPod classic the lock problem - remove entire assembly?

Hi,

Would appreciate some help. My ipod's lock switch flicks on and off at very high frequency, rendering the ipod unusable.

Occasionally it stays on the open position for an extended period of time, and I propose removing the entire assembly then, to disable locking entirely and remove the problem.

Might this cause problems?

I am just worried it might short circuit. If someone could set my mind at rest, that would be great.
