What exactly is play count?

I mean what is its importance? Since i've been told by experts time and time again that MP3s and music files don't wear out, then why is play count important? just a question.

It can be used for organizing playlists. You can setup a smart playlist (which means iTunes automatically generates and updates it for you based on criteria that you establish) of songs that have never been played so you aren't listening to the same music over and over again. You can also setup a smart playlist of songs that have been played a lot. It all depends on what you want to listen to.

Playcounts are also handy for podcasts which, in iTunes and the iPod, can be used to managed episodes deleting the ones you have played. For large video collections it can tell you what movies you haven't watched or what episode in a TV series you have yet to watch.

yes, i did discover those "automatic playlists" I dont bother with them though, i make my own playlists. Its just funny when i think of it now when i first discovered the playcount, i just thought it was counting down how many plays i had left before they "wear out" haha.
