I bought my iPod 120gb classic back in Dec 2008 and its always had the problem of random crashes/resets and skipping songs. I eventually got sick of the Apple logo (sometimes in 8 bit colour) so I stopped using it.
This won't fix the problem but it gave me the option of actually using the iPod again. I installed Rockbox using Emcore on to it and its been running for 4 hours without a crash. I have no choice but to believe its a software issue and appalled at Apple not to have done something about it for over 3 years! www . freemyipod . org / wiki / EmCORE_Installation (spaces added to get around security) I'm not sure how this messes with warranty but it didn't apply for me anyway. Rockbox allows you to browse music by folders or by metadata (as you currently do with the stock music player, ie. artist, album, genre, etc). You can apply different 'themes' to the music player and it gives a million times more flexibility than the stock OS (such as a 5 band Graphic EQ). Proceed at your own risk but because I'm so glad I can use my iPod, I thought I'd share this with others. The installation is very easy and takes approximately 15 mins. It does format your iPod so you will lose all the music on there. You just need to copy the music back on after the installation is complete. You don't have to use iTunes at all anymore since the iPod behaves just like a portable HDD with a music player! For those who want more information on Rockbox, you can download the manual at: download . rockbox . org / daily / manual / rockbox-ipodnano2g .pdf This method installs the iPod Nano version on to the iPod Classic and I can stay its not crashed once (Rockbox page says the port is unusable at the moment but you will not be installing the iPod Classic port but the Nano port instead). |
