Ipod--I can't see my songs

I have a new 5 year Ipod 8GB that I finally decided to load some songs onto. I loaded about 200 songs from CDs onto my computer and then from my computer onto my Ipod. The songs seem to have loaded in the Ipod ok, in fact I can see them and also play the songs but only when I have the Ipod connected to my computer. When I break that tether and try to use just with earphones, I don't see the songs nor of course do they play.

Hope someone will help this old guy figure out how to use this new technology. Thanks in Advance.

The display turning off after you unplug it from your computer (hopefully you are properly ejecting it through iTunes and not just unplugging the iPod) is an indication that the iPod's battery is no longer able to hold a charge. This would make complete sense if you haven't used the iPod in a long, long time. It sounds like you purchased the iPod 5 years ago and kind of just let it sit there. If that's the case, or even if you purchased it online in a "new" condition, the battery is dead.

You can either replace the battery yourself, send it off to a 3rd party repair service, have Apple do an out-of-warranty repair (which will cost you about $250), or buy a new iPod. Either way, you have to think about what you want to do. The easiest but most expensive path is to just replace the iPod with a new one and the least expensive option is to install a new battery yourself but it is also the most complex route.
