trying to restore but error occurring

My classic 120 for some reason refused to play any tacks , i could go through the menu and artists, album etc ok but when i click on to play the time countdown doesnt start and therefore doesnt play. I decided to use itunes to reset my ipod. On doing so ive done a diagnostics check and came back everything fine. I then clicked restore ipod, started the process the an error message comes up stating my ipod cannot restore as it contains files that are in use by another application. But nothing else on my pc is open to be conflicting with my ipod....
Could somebody please advise.
Dont know whether having spotify on my pc even though it isnt open could cause this?

saw it's been a while since you had this problem. Since you have an iPod classic it is possible that the problem is caused by some kind of damage on your iPod hard disk. Try test your iPod disk for errors with via Windows dskchk feature or HDTune.

I highly doubt it spotify is the reason for your iPod worries. You can also try reseting your iPod by pressing and holding the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears.
