ipod 20gb 4th gen doesn't charge

I have an old ipod 20gb 4th gen that no longer charges. I've replaced the battery twice after the first battery looked like it had just died. The ipod works for a bit until the charge the battery comes with runs out, then dies.

The ipod syncs while it has battery power and shows the charging animations on screen, but the battery doesn't charge. It's been dropped a few times from small heights but nothing major. I have also tried multiple wires and tried some of solutions from the apple support forums (such as trying to reset with the menu and centre button and trying different usb ports, including an AC adapter i know works), but it still doesn't charge.

I don't want to pay for it to be repaired, I'd rather buy a new mp3 player, but if I can fix it myself with help from here and with minimal cost for parts, that would be great.

No real solution here, save getting another battery. But, try charging it until it says it is fully charged, then unplug it, wait a few moments and plug it back in until it says it is fully charged again. I had the same problems when I bought my 3G 40gig used a year ago. I replaced the battery and it acted like it wasn't charged and that is what I did to solve it. I get about 4-5 hours out of it now.
