Wink Restore and reset iPod if iTunes does not recognize it

Here is a tip for the following problem:
- your iPod is not recognized by iTunes (i.e. it does not come up as a device)
- iTunes tells you that you need to restore your iPod, but when you click Ok, it does not restore, nothing happens
- your iPod may play correctly but you cannot add new songs to it, and the iPod may even report that you have zero space left while know you have many GB left
- at the same time Windows Explorer does show the iPod as a device. It's just iTunes which cannot find it.

I am writing this post because it is not clearly described in any text, Apple support sites included, I have been able to find. It is simple to handle, but the key is the exact sequence of actions you need to follow.

Hope it helps someone.

1. Disconnect the iPod from iTunes.

2. Put it into disk mode - this is done as follows:
First press the center button and Menu button simultaneously for about 6-8 seconds until the screen goes dark. Immediately release the Menu button and press center button and Play/Pause button simultaneously (you need to do this before the Apple logo appears on the screen).
You can repeat this a few times if you don't manage. Put your iPod on flat surface and use both hands if needed.
If you succeed your iPod should now have a screen with white background where it says "Disk Mode" on it.

3. Now connect the iPod to your computer. You will need to have an internet connection on the computer you connect to. iTunes should now be able to recognize and find your iPod.

4. iTunes will most likely tell you now that something is wrong or corrupted on your iPod and asks you to restore. Click the OK button, or click the Restore button in iTunes.

5. iTunes wil now download new iPod software and install it on your iPod.

Note that this procedure will erase all songs, videos, photos etc from your iPod. You need to then restore those onto the iPod from iTunes.
