How to scan 5g ipod drive?

New to these forums..hope someone can help.

I have a 5g video ipod.

Recently I tried to scan the 5g iPod via a low level scan utility and it did not work. All blocks show as bad. (same utility works for my older 4g)

Is the 5g drive not usable as a "drive" - anyone successfully done this?

Thanks

Sure, the 5G can be used as a drive; you just need to check the "Enable disk use" box (and click the Apply button) in the Summary tab of the iPod's sync settings window in iTunes.

Not sure of the current status of using low-level repair utils; in the past, Apple has advised against them (but maybe that was just to avoid iPod software problems from block re-mapping or people getting creative with partitions)....

Yes - I was able to use the iPod as a drive like suggested. Thanks

Since there is no HD scan function built into the iPods diagnostics I was trying to run a HD scan via freeware like HD Tune/HD scan. All blocks show as BAD. Any ideas why? Appears as if the utilities cannot read the iPod as a drive.

Thanks

Sorry; not a clue. I'm a Mac user, and utils like Disk Util and Disk Warrior work fine for me. (Guess I've always assumed that iPod software included features to spare out bad blocks, etc. so I've never felt the need to dig around on the platter ;-)
