Upgrade 60gb 5G to 160 GB HD?

If this has been covered, I can not find it and so apologize in advance.

Can a 60 GB 5th Gen video iPod be upgraded with a larger hard drive, like an 80 GB or a 160GB? I love my 60GB iPod but it's almost full.

I have a similar question, can a 30gb 5G iPod be updated to an 80gb HD?

Yes, the 60GB can be upgraded to 80GB, but not sure on the 160GB.

No, the 30GB cannot be upgraded to 60GB/80GB, unless you change the backplate, headphone jack/hold switch. But by the time you replace all those parts, you may as well buy an 80Gb iPod to begin with.

Nahh,
you can put a 80GB HDD in a 30GB 5G iPod.
The harddrive is thinner/the same size (not sure exactly) in the 80GB 6G.
So a 80GB 6G HDD should fit into a 30GB 5G shell fine.

Are you sure? What's a good price to pay for it?

PDASmart.com

the best price i found online for a replacement/upgraded HD is at www.PDASmart.com. I got an 80GB to replace the 5G 60GB I broke (they are both the "large" size 8mm[5G 60GB/80GB, Classic 120GB], compared to the slim size 5mm [5G 30GB, and Classic 80GB(i think, anybody know for sure?]) It cost $138 with shipping. the only problem is not my iPod wont restore plus they included a tool set with everything you need to open and install the HD

Has anyone actually done this or is this all in theory? I don't believe the firmware/hardware would support larger capacity than what its designed to support. Putting a 160GB in a 80GB iPod might be able to fit but I'm not sure if the iPod would see the extra 80GB capacity.

Well, you have to remember that the OS that is in the 160 GB drive will be 6th gen I believe, so you would be upgrading the iPod 5th gen to really being a 6th gen with a different front, right?

You're iPod won't restore after you replaced the hard drive?

In theory, all a hard drive is is something that stores data. So in theory, it shouldn't matter what hard drive you use.
In fact, go to http://www.ipodparts.com/ipodpartscenter5g.htm and they have replacement 100 GB hard drives.

But as I said, even if there is an OS on the hard drive, I think the mainboard would have something that sort of recognizes the fact that it is a 5G and not a 6G iPod because a hard drive is just something to store data on it. And if the mainboards of the 5G and 6G are identical, that would mean you could simply upload the 6G OS onto a 5G iPod.

Isn't the OS stored on board, not the Hard Drive?
