I'm not familiar with Vista but have you tried unchecking the box at the top that says "use AutoPlay for all media and devices"?

I know on XP if you connect a device and it asks what to do and you click something, it may automatically do that from then on. It may work the same with Vista, with your iPod connected go to My Computer, right click on the iPod click properties then the AutoPlay tab, click "select an action to perform" then select "take no action." It might be different with Vista, if you even have that menu at all.

If disk mode is not enabled on your iPod, try enabling it and then look at/ change your autoplay settings. If you're able to change your settings, then try disabling disk mode to see if the changes 'stick'.

Disk mode didnt work for me and it still opens automatically when i plugin my ipod..I suppose nobody here has ever gotten their ipod to show under autoplay devices in vista ? Whose fault is all this autoplay problems ? Is it itunes , ipod firmware or windows vista that should try to fix this problem ?

You know what, I had this happen when I got my new iPod 2 weeks ago and I figured it out. It has nothing to do with Autoplay at all so you can leave those settings alone. At some point you probably disabled some ipod software on your computer from running automatically at windows startup (that's what happened to me because with my old iPod it didn't need to so I disabled it).
Again, I'm not familiar with vista so it may be a little different for you. You need to go to where processes that run at startup can be selected/deselected, for me it's Start>Run>and then type "msconfig" click ok. When the System Configuration box comes up click on the startup tab then go through the list and make sure everything that has to do with iTunes or iPod has a check in the box (there might only be one and it's called "iTuneshelper"). Apply, okay, restart.

Dunno if anyone is still reading this thread but...
Autoplay's faq's address this problem. your ipod does not show up as a device because "If you have connected a volume device to your computer (for example, a USB flash drive or external hard drive), that device will not appear in the Devices section of AutoPlay. To browse the contents of volume devices, open Computer. AutoPlay only lists non-volume devices. This is because these devices don't use a standard file system and AutoPlay cannot browse the contents of these devices to see what types of files they contain"

However, I have found that when i plug in my ipod, it recognizes "audio files" and will follow the autoplay default for that. so likely enough it opens your ipod folder because your autoplay options for audio files is to open the folder.

Lightbulb Solution

You can choose not for a windows explorer window to pop up every time your iPhone is connected.

1. Open Windows Photo Gallery. (You can find it by pressing start, and typing "Photo Gallery")
2. Click "File" then "Options"
3. Click the "Import" tab
4. Above the "Restore Defaults" button, click "Change Default Autoplay Options".
5. Scroll down to the bottom where devices should be listed, and choose "Take No Option" from the drop-down menu at the right.

(The iPhone is listed twice - once for the camera and once for the files themselves. I would disable autoplay for both.)

Now if only iTunes wouldn't go AWOL for 1 minute every time my phone is connected.
