I have a G2, 20M Ipod which has the metal case on all four sides/ends of the unit, with the sockets for FW and audio protruding through the metal (and not in a white plastic cut out such as is shown in the battery replacement photos we've all seen). Has anyone successfully removed such a back to replace the battery? I noted that this question has been asked before but no answer posted. Also, do others have G2 units with chrome all around or was there a production change? jsrobbins

It's a standard Gen 2. I haven't replaced a Gen 2 battery, but I understand that it's easy. The thing to watch is that you begin opening it in the right place, as the 'ribbon cable' from the HD is more vulnerable than that on the Gen 1.

I was wondering if it is possible to put a 4G 12hr battery into my 3G ipod.

1.) Is there enough space?
2.) Different connector?
3.) Different voltage?

Has anyone else attempted/completed this before?

I love my 3G and am not too parcial for the 4G scroll wheel, so I want to "make a 3.5G" hehe. A supercharged 3G.

Well, the 3G battery specs are:
Li-Ion, 3.7 Volts 850 mAh

gotta do some more research on the 4G battery...

"Ipod's dirt little secret" is ridiculous.

1. You can buy a 2 year extended warranty for $47-59, whihc includes battery
2. When the battery runs out, out-of-warranty, it's $100 to send it in and get it replaced

Tips on replacing iPod 3G battery

Hi folks,

Just replaced the battery for the first time on my 3G 40GB iPod. I bought the battery from Other World Computing at http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_It...em=NWTIPOD8503 (cost $25.99 plus $5 UPS 2-day shipping). The battery arrived with 2 blue plastic "wedging tools" plus instructions. I reviewed these instructions, plus those found at http://www.ipodbattery.com. Here are some additional techniques that worked for me:

1. To crack the case, carefully insert an Xacto knife (curved blade) at a LOWER CORNER and gently twist the blade. This opens a crack along the long side into which I could insert the plastic "wedging tool". It is then a simple matter to pry the case apart by working along the perimeter.

2. The disk drive cable is attached to mother board via a unique plug and socket. The plug and socket detach easily as the disk drive is swung out from the case to access the battery. Once the battery is replaced, be sure to FIRMLY SEAT the plug into the socket before reassembling the case. Press the plug into the socket until you feel a firm snap. (I failed to do this at first, and had to reopen the case.)

Good luck!

www.ipodmods.com replaces it for a nomianl fee. Plus while its there u can change the backlight color buton light collors and the front cover. And i bet if u email them thelly do the brushed steel. And it garuantees thelly do it right with a waranty so if they screww up u get money or a new or refurbished one with the mods u ordered. good for 3 or 4 gen.

In three days I'm getting my first ipod. A 3g 40 gig open box discount from bose. I'm really happy it isn't a 4g for the simple fact that I am able to break anything with moving parts. The sole reason I wanted an Ipod was that it didn't move at all. My question is only if the 'longer battery life' battery can be used in the 3g, possibly pushing it to ten hours or so giving two hrs away for 'better software'. Or has the ipod changed so greatly that the suppossed software/external features required a total internal change making this new better battery have completely different connections?

## To mipod: What seems to be the reason with the battery not working but still fitting?
