If the problem is with the iPod, then its a hardware problem and you probably need to exchange your ipod for a new one if its still under warrant or just have it fixed.

I'm still dreaming.

If you've tried lots of different headphones, then chances are you're right and it's a hardware problem, in which case you should get the iPod fixed or exchanged under warrant, and if it is no longer under warrant and you would prefer an upgrade buy an iPod Classic, or whichever of the newest generation (or even 5.5g Video) iPod suits you.

If you don't have a warrenty you can buy a headphone module off ebay. It's relitivly cheap about $25. Then go to ifixit.com and go to the guides and pick your iPod model and follow the instructions.
