Hi
Just switched ny iPod mini to another PC, moved all the libraries OK, loaded the latest iTunes etc. However iPod is not being picked (recognised) up by windows, run the diagnostic tests on itunes and it says ipod not connected. Have done some of the tests/suggestions that Apple say, but still doesn't see it, not even as a drive. First time I plugged the Ipod in it did say looking for drivers, but didn't find any, and now it can't see it at all. PC is a Mesh with Windows XP, (updated with latest SPs - I think). Driving me mad, only switched PCs as husband has got a newer ipod, so thought it would be easier, wish I hadn't bothered now! |

Have a look in control panel/system/hardware/device manager in Windows XP. It might be shown as a disk drive in there that isn't working. Should be a device with a little red cross over it.
It will need to be deleted, then reconnect it again, probably following a PC reload to allow everything to reset in PCland. Hopefully it will then auto configure again and this time find the relevant drivers etc. Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year HTH Dave.

Hi Dave
Thanks for your quick reply, been in the device manager, and it shows the iPod as a yellow colour in the category other devices. I've deleted it and tried again, and same happened. When you say a PC reload, do you mean a re-format? I haven't done that yet, was hoping to avoid that! Similar things happened when attaching my sons new Sony Ericson phone, PC can't see it, so I guess there's something wrong in a general way rather than just the ipod! Regards Fiona Happy new year too! |

Hi Fiona,
No, I don't mean a reformat. - Delete the ipod reference from the device manager, then without reconnecting the ipod, reload your PC (start button(bottom left) / turn off computer / restart. Then, when it's fully reloaded, try connecting your ipod again, see what happens then.... When you connect the ipod, does it show up in the 'safely remove hardware' bit (taskbar green arrow over grey box - double click). I find it can take a few minutes for the PC to work out what's going on, so best to go and make a cuppa or something while it's thinking about it ;-) cheers, Dave.

Hi Dave
Many thanks for clarifying! I've tried as you suggested, and I'm afraid it didn't work! It came up with the connection Wizard, and I let it hunt around, and to no avail. So doesn't have the icon (taskbar green arrow over grey box). I found the following http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925196/en-us so attempted this, but it won't let me edit/delete the registry subkey despite me altering the permissions. I suspect this may be the key to solving this ipod connection and the connection of the phone. But am stuck at the moment with trying to get this ms fix to work, I can't delete the subkeys! Sorry this is escalating, but any suggestions gratefully received! Cheers Fiona |

My, that's a bag of worms there Fiona. It's beyond my experience, never having really got into dealing directly with registry keys.
Is it worth trying a registry key cleaner application ?...it might do it for you. I believe (although don't ask me where) that there are freeware versions of these knocking about. Check with cnet for reliable recommendations..... Good luck Dave.
