Please state how many songs are on your iPod Classic and whether you are having crashing problems (meaning sometimes the Classic hangs and goes back to the Apple Logo for several minutes). Also please indicate how long it takes to eject the iPod Classic from iTunes.
Also, how many playlists/Smart Playlists do you have (assuming you are syncing everything to your iPod) My 160GB Classic has 18261 songs and I am getting the sporadic crashes. It takes about 4-5 minutes to eject from iTunes. I have almost 200 playlists and the majority are Smart Playlists, with many that rely on other Smart Playlists. I also have 3 playlist folders. My 80GB Classic has 12,889 songs on it (with roughly 6GB free). My iPod has never crashed on me or spontaneously rebooted.
It takes approximately 2 minutes for iTunes to eject it (compared to about 20 seconds on my old 5.5G). I did notice that the length and frequency of the freezing I get in iTunes is directly related to how many songs I have on it. When the iPod is empty and I start manually syncing there is no freezing whatsoever. But as soon as a start getting a substantial number of tracks on there the freezing increases. Porieux, you keep mentioning the hardware crashing-- I would just go and exchange it for another one in order to rule out a hardware problem at this point. My iPod gets a little slow when going from Now Playing to the Main Menu, but that's cause it's spinning up the hd. I have never had it crash. Rick

My 80GB Classic has 6,368 songs using 28.4GB on it and 2.37GB of videos and 620.3MB of photos. This leaves me with 42.66GB of free space.
My Classic has not hanged or crashed yet, thankfully, after using it daily for almost 1 month. It takes me about 10 - 15 seconds to eject my iPod from iTunes. I am using Windows XP Pro SP2 on a laptop. -- Just to add, I have like 15 playlists Last edited by xshingox; 10-01-2007 at 11:37 PM. |

8,900 songs until I hucked the POS for not displaying half the album art, displaying it slow, forgetting settings and oh yeah the ridiculous iTunes/Classic Lag.
Back to the 5.5G Baby!

Oh another thing that would be good to point out is how many playlists/Smart Playlists do you have?
I have almost 200 playlists and the majority are Smart Playlists, with many that rely on other Smart Playlists. I also have 3 playlist folders. Thanks for the responses so far. |

I have 13,827 songs and 311 videos on my 160, 30gb free. Hasn't crashed once yet. I don't use smart playlists of any kind though.
Takes a couple of minutes to eject from my Macbook. Last edited by Robby Bobson; 10-02-2007 at 07:53 AM. |

I have 7145 but I could of at least doubled that when I add songs to iTunes I add only what I like. Some CDs I only add a few songs to my library.
No playlists or smart playlists. I use shuffle. Never crashed, ejects in 10 or 15 seconds. |

Without looking at it. Mine has approx 18900 files on it. With about 6 smartplaylists (Cross referenced) and about 5 normal playlists.
It ejects itself instantly IF it has synced with itunes, it will take a few minutes to interupt the sync process. I think my ipod classic 160GB has crashed once, maybe twice. |

I have just under 4,000 songs on my 160GB and about 8 playlists. Most of the playlists are smartlists. I only created one that isn't smart and that contains 120 of my most favorite songs.
My iPod only crashed once when I first got it and synced it for the first time. The problem was because it stopped syncing due to iTunes warning me it couldn't find 5 of the items I was trying to sync. Once I removed them, it hasn't crashed at all since. Ipod ejects in about a minute after syncing.

So far most people don't seem to have anywhere near my 200 playlists.
This may be a key factor in the crashing problem. Thanks again for the replies. |

1400 playlists, more or less. If I only sync tracks, no problem other than the snail-pace response.
Today, I finished manually creating all my play lists and 30 seconds after ejecting it reset itself into a brick. |

I have 36448 songs on my ipod. I transfer things on manually, and I haven't created any playlists due to the ridiculous freezing every time I add a song to a playlist. It also won't let me create playlist folders on the ipod.
I think the itunesDB file on my ipod is about 50MB. When I eject the ipod it freezes itunes for about a minute to two minutes. There is a similar freeze when I plug it in. I have not had any crashes while using the ipod when it is not connected to a computer. |

Album art is the culprit of the crashes and slow performance, since album art has all sorts of different dimensions and formats who knows what exactly is causing it.
I had 8995 songs before I took it back..had no slowness or infinite reboot cycles but I didn't want it once I realized I lost play counts/ratings when I played any games and the freezing/lag with iTunes was quite annoying. Currently have 4,478 on my 5.5G that replaced the classic. Little more picky with a 80GB model than the 160GB Classic since I know I can fill up the 80GB pretty easily if I wanted.
