Anyone have the specs on the Classic's hard drives in the 80 and 160 formats? My THIRD 4G just died two weeks ago and I had a feeling they were going to release the 6G soon, so I want to make sure the hard drive isn't a POS like the 4G one was. Luckily my latest 4G lasted nearly two and a half years, as the first two lasted a month each.

From the iFixit teardown, the 80 GB drive is a Toshiba:

The only component which has failed in my Toshiba notebook was the Toshiba hard disk. I replaced it with a Seagate.

The reason I'm asking is I have an iPod Photo (60G) that I guess would be considered a 4th generation and I want to aquire one of the larger capacity iPod classics (160G). If there the same footprint would the newer model fit my two year old Bose SoundDock speakers?

Hi and welcome to iLounge.

The short answer is no. As with any previously released Apple device, it only plays MPEG-4/H.264 videos.

The new iPod classic and nano have pushed the envelope in this regard a tiny bit, now being more in-line with what the iPhone supports (allowing slightly above 640x480 resolution, basically), but it's still basically the same video playback standards that were announced last year with the 5G update.

You can check out our article The Complete Guide to iPod, Apple TV and iPhone video formats for more information.

Did somebody buy his iPod from the Apple on-line store? What are the delivery times since you ordered. I don't live in the USA and someone is bringing it for me so I need to know how long it takes to receive the ipod.

thanks.

I keep forgetting about this thread.
Anyway I'm grateful I don't feel obsolete with my 5G. I have no desire to buy this new Classic as cool as it looks. I'm not even sure what they could have done right now to make it more desireable. I think I'll wait 4 years between every Classic upgrade. Nanos are gonna be my yearly pet :P

Stopped by the Apple store today to play with the new Ipods. I have to say that a feature I love on the interface of the new Classic is that the rating is displayed along with the Now Playing info. This is huge for me since I always check song ratings and now have to click through to check current rating.

I have pre-ordered the Touch but this feature alone as small as it seems is making me reconsider. I love the large album art on the Touch but really would like this display option.

Also as a side note, I was concerned about the screensaver people were reporting that pops up during play showing time and battery life. After playing in the store, I think this is diabled when you choose backlight always on like I do when driving and it's docked in a speaker system.

Updates on Compatibility

Alpine Car Unit iPod Cable (KCE-422i)-
Classic is controllable via my Alpine head unit (2006); HOWEVER, when in shuffle mode, the head unit does not receive updates regarding what the name of the track, album, and artist are after a certain amount of time (around 10 minutes). This causes the same issues with skipping songs in shuffle mode as i reported above. :-(

Luna Alarm Clock -
Playback works as normal; HOWEVER, (luckily I found out on a weekend), the snooze function no longer seems to work with the classic. Grr!

That shuffle / power saver bug needs to be fixed. Have you reported it to Apple? Does Apple have any mechanism for reporting bugs in iPod firmware?

I'm curious...if you jar it out of power saver mode, does it show you the correct track when the next track starts playing? Or does it stay permanently out of sync?

Has anyone reproduced this problem on the new Nano?

Sure, go to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html and choose "Bug Report" under Feedback Type.

Not sure how much attention they pay to it, but unlike feature requests, I think they would care more about bug repots. I have reported small bugs in that past (and referred others to do so) that have been fixed in the following firmware update.

Can you reproduce this problem on your new 8GB Silver Nano 3G? Here is the link to steinbch's description (it's #2 in the list):

This is really a "Junior Programmer" bug. Who programs the iPods these days? Is it outsourced?

Actually yes, I've already noticed this one myself as well (and reported it using the above link).

Another little cosmetic one: Go into a short listing of playlists, and highlight a playlist and hold down the centre button to add it to the On-the-Go playlist. You'll end up with a series of blank "0 songs" playlists that will magically appear at the bottom. Doesn't seem to hurt anything, but certainly looks strange.....

If you wake it out of power saving by anything other than track forward or back it will be fine. Unfortunately you can't really do this when it is connected via the port for peripheral control.

As an added bonus, the new models also show an artwork thumbnail at the top of the lyrics.
