I haven't checked the tech specs, but the thicknesses are different I believe, so I doubt 5G cases will fit, at least in the depth axis

It's similar to the Front Row interface on Macs and the tv that Apple produces.

I think it's also alphabetically based, because in one of the demos, the artwork shown for the "artists" field is Air-Pocket Symphony, which obviously is towards the top of the iPod under A.

I posted this in another thread but it should be read:

There was a bit of dispute between owners as to whether just new iPods are called Classics and others called Videos, well I can officially confirm that the entire line, starting from the 5GB 1G are now called iPod Classics. Where did I get this information? From Steve Jobs keynote, when her stateds in his own words "Users have come up with various names for the iPods. Usually referring to them as a 4'th gen or an iPod Video, but today, we're giving the line a name and its called iPod Classic." He then showed the two polycarbonate white and black iPods on the screen and continued with "These are the iPod Classics as we know them today, and this is what they will now look like." Then he introduced the new 80 and 160GB.

So yes, it is official that the 1G all the way through to these new ones are now referred to as iPod Classics.

You can call them whatever you want. I don't think Jobs was insisting that you use a certain name for an old iPod. To the extent it's useful, I'm sure people will continue to use the 3g/4g/5g terminology.

You're right, I'm just saying in instances of some users who are saying that this new line is the only Classic line, that its exclusive and that everything prior was a video or photo. They can be called 6 gen or whatever but as far as exact naming they're the classic line.

hERE ARE a few questions I got.

Will the ipod classic feature a new OS and hardware model therefore rendering previous accessories and software obsolete? Or is this just an upgraded "video" ipod with perhaps faster processors and more hard drive space?

We know the itouch is an OSx based device, But what about the Classic and Nano? What are the tech specs inside this little bugger? From my initial impressions on the Nano, is that they've basically just shrunk exactly whats in the ipod video and transplanted into the Nano. And then perhaps put a slightly beefed up "video" ipod hardware back into the classic. If this is the case, it's basically the same hardware and i'd imagine it to be completely backwards compatible also giving the 5g's the ability to get the new firmware as well, maybe just a little cripppled

So the 80GB iPod classic is going to sell for 249 USD. Nice, I thought, since my 4g iPod photo is getting old. But it's selling for 249 EURO's ($340!) over here in Amsterdam. What a rediculous profit to make! I'm going to figure out how to get one from the States...

Well, as I mentioned in another thread, the reality is that the generational-names have only ever been used by Apple to distinguish between different models for support purposes, since it's necessary to identify which generation of iPod you have when looking up knowledgebase articles or documentation, or other similar information.

Apple has always referred to the full-size iPod simply as the "iPod" in marketing, literature, advertising, and even packaging. They have traditionally only had one model on the market at a time for a full-size iPod, so it's simply been referred to as the "iPod." If you go into a store and buy an iPod, the box doesn't say "5G iPod" -- it merely says "iPod"

Now, with the advent of the iPod touch, it's become necessary to differentiate the models for marketing purposes, and to be careful about not trying to make assumptions about which is the "real" iPod. Therefore, two new names: iPod classic, and iPod touch. This way, Apple doesn't come right out and suggest which model is the new "flagship" iPod. There really no longer is a "flagship" iPod in the traditional sense of the word.

Yes, I agree with you Jesse. I would think of the iPod as a 6'th generation since it is, but it would be an "iPod Classic Sixth Generation" since it was announced. I'm not saying at all that they aren't gens or anything, and they can be called whatever. I had picked up the box and shown my dad that it just says iPod on it and that now it is called Classic. Every iPod brand has a name now. "Shuffle, Nano, Touch, and Classic" so when you say "2G Nano, 1G touch, why wouldn't you say 5.5G classic?

Gonna upgrade my 5G white 60GB for a new black 80GB as I've nearly filled it up and it's scratched to buggery. But I must say I was expecting a much bigger change to the interface. Haven't managed to find out do we know whether the new iPod will crossfade? That's one really obvious feature I'm surprised they haven't added yet. It would probably stop me from skipping songs before the end because I do get impatient!

Fortunately, Mac OS X 10.3.9 is still supported by iTunes 7.4, and therefore by the new iPod models.

10.4.10 is required for iPhone use, and perhaps by extension for the iPod touch, but the iPod classic should work just fine with 10.3.9.

My thoughts:

Just called the local Apple store, I asked if they had the 160s in, she said no, not yet, but they have the new 80s in - now I wonder if she meant the new ones or if she was confused? Anyways, I am buying the 160 in silver though I think I'm going to wait until Costco gets them. Last time it took 3 weeks for the 5.5 to arrive there, hopefully that will be the same this time. Just sold the 5.5 yesterday.

Reasons for buying it:
Silver - it's my favorite color for an electronic
Capacity - double the capacity, I can fit all the favorites on now, indeed much less choosing.
Cover Flow - ooooh factor
Necessity? Not really but I listed the 5.5 on a whim, sold within 24 hours, that decided it for me last year, and it decided it for me this year too. My thoughts were if it sells, cool, if not I'm still in love with the 5.5 and it would be no big deal.
Touch? - Although I love the interface of the iPhone and the iPod touch - I'm nervous about scratching the touch screen, I like the durability and protection of the classic. Although wifi is cool and all, it's not for me. I use it as my main music player, on the go, in the car, at home.

New iTunes - folders - yay! no folders on the iPod itself - big boooo!

iSkins? I checked the specs and they seem to be almost identical if not identical for the 80gb 5.5 and the 160 classic - so do you all think the iSkins will fit? Or did they change the dimensions of the click wheel, etc?

Huge thanks to Jeremy and Jesse for the lighting fast reviews, vids, and that gorgeous flickr unboxing gallery. You guys rock!

Edited to add: I just read the open letter from Steve Jobs to iPhone users. Apple is planning to give the early adopters 100 dollars off towards the purchase of another Apple product because he received many angry emails regarding the drastic price drop.

Quote:
Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned.
So if you have a family member or friend who was an early adopter of the iPhone and is not going to take advantage of this offer, maybe they can buy a new one for you, that would be like getting the 160 for the 80 price. I'm certainly going to ask my brother if he decides not to use it.

iPhone 8GB + iPod Classic 160GB = best of both worlds

with -$100 to buy the Classic, it is that much sweeter.
