files left behind??

Hello,

I sometimes use a freinds pc to charge my ipod 30 gig video ipod. They do not have itunes so i just plug in the ipod to charge. the ipod screen says "do not disconnect" while its charging the battery because he does not have itunes. enable disk use is disabled. and it has never been "opened threw windows explorer" threw the removable disk drive. my question is. Are files still put on to his pc threw temp files or anything else of that nature from my ipod even though no files have ever been opend on the pc. just pluged into charge with no itunes on the pc?

Thanks ALOT for your information regarding this question

If iTunes is not installed on the other computer, your iPod may not actually charge since the computer doesn't have the drivers to recognize the device. Also, if disk mode is not enabled then the other computer wouldn't even see it as a disk drive and shouldn't put any files on it. Did something happen that would make you ask?

Wow, I'm surprised it would charge without iTunes being installed. It was my understanding that your USB controller wouldn't apply voltage to the port if the device is not recognized. Maybe beware, you might think its charging when its really not.

If disk mode is disabled then how did you put "some information" on your iPod? Did you have it enabled at one time, then disabled it? If so, then those files will remain and even with disk mode disabled sometimes it seems that iPod's show up in Windows. If you can navigate your iPod's contents through Windows then those files may not be private. You could change the file properties to Hidden so that they won't be visible (assuming the PC your connected to isn't set to display hidden files).

yes i believe i must of had it enabled at one point but it is now disabled. so if ur ipod is connected to a pc then the pc will automaticly possibly pull some files off of it and hide it somewhere in windows in temp files or registry?

Yes, maybe if you had it enabled at one time and connected it to a PC w/o iTunes, that computer would remember the iPod even once you disable disk mode.

your are basically asking if the files that you had on the ipod are still secure, right?

Unless your friend opened them on his computer, they should still be "yours" (ie they are NOT copied to temp or registry). The only thing that happens is that since you've plugged your ipod into your friends computer before, it doesn't go through the whole "you've plugged in new hardware", "your hardware is installed and ready to use" process. It will just recognize it and continue on.

the ipod doesn't install anything on the pc that you are connecting it to even with itunes installed. It just gets recognized by the pc and will send power over the bus if it's connected to a USB2 port. I don't remember if it will show as a drive letter or not if disk use is disabled, I'm thinking that windows will not assign a drive letter to it (my shuffle never used to show a drive letter in the safely remove hardware dialog, but would sync fine.)

It's even simpler than that: without the iPod drivers, Windows just treats it like a generic USB disk drive, so it will charge and allow access to everything.

it will allow access but unless its clicked open on the pc (the individual files) they wont be in temp files, registry, or recent docs. right?

No idea what you're asking as your question makes no sense in relation to my point about the iPod being treated by windows as a removable drive when there are no iPod specific drivers present.

At any rate, as best I can understand your question based on other posts, you seem to be paranoid about Windows itself putting files on the disk, and the answer is "not unless you told it to".

MacOS writes a gazillion hidden files to every disk ever mounted (albeit small, inconsequential files), Windows, at most, will write a thumbnail.db file to any folder actually examined.

I think he's paranoid about his iPod files being left on that PC. (The other way around from your analysis Code Monkey)

And the answer is no, the files from your iPod will not be copied as temp files.

If you access the files on the iPod they can be listed in recent docs and the registry. Just a normal part of what Windows does. They can be cleared out of those places as well (with Tweak UI), but that is a Windows question, not an iPod question.
