How Random Is The Shuffle Mode?

Currently there are 546 songs on my iPod, when in Shuffle mode it seems like a lot of songs from the same playlists get played.

When a new Shuffle session is started, how random are the songs chosen?

What is the method / algorythm used in "shuffling" the songs?

Thanks!

Q: How random is shuffle mode?
A: Not very.

If you play an entire playlist in shuffle mode, it will play each song once. If you play it on repeat, it will even play every song once before it plays any a second time (I think). But if you play only a few songs on shuffle, and then stop, and then start a new shuffle session, there's no guarantee that you won't hear those same few songs again. There does seem to be a pattern of playing the same songs over and over again, while other songs don't get any playtime at all.

There is a solution, however. You can "Take control of your iPod with smartlists", by following Code Monkey's tutorial on smartlist management, conveniently linked for your...uhh, convenience, in my sig . It's just neat as hell, and you can use it for a whole lot of crap, not the least of which is forcing full rotation of your library so all your songs get equal (or at least some) time in the sun.
