Scrolling letter weirdness

I've just noticed this today and I'm pretty sure this never happened before.
I'm using my 5.5 80GB to scroll down the list of albums (or tracks) and I'm looking at the big letter that appears in the middle of the screen, and I see it going: A, B, T, C, D, E, T, F, T, G, H, I, T... and so on. Basically the letter "T" appears every time I scroll through a title that starts with the word "The", like "The Alien", or "The Baby".

Has anyone seen this? I am sure I would have noticed this before today. The only thing that I have done is upgrade to the latest iTunes last night and then I added a couple more songs to my iPod this morning.
Could that have done it?
Does the new iTunes screw up the scrolling letter?

yes this is the "quick scroll feature..so when you scroll quickly it shows the letter you are at on the screen and lets you scroll to the bottom or to the top allot faster

Eric,
thank you, and yes I know the scrolling feature.
My problem is the letter "T" appearing multiple times during the scrolling when it should not appear, every time it hits a title like "The Alien", which is listed under the letter "A" (as in "A"lien).

The song "The Alien" would have normally been in the "T" section (it is on my 60GB video, and I have not yet changed to 7.1). So now you say it's in the "A"s but when you scroll past it a "T" flashes up? Strange, did you change the sort order for any songs using the new iTunes feature? If not, then it seems that there is a default rule to ignore "The" but the scrolling feature does not ignore the "T" ...

Hmm...I wonder if this an effect of the new sorting fields? Do you sync automatically, or do you manually manage your 'pod?

Yes I definitely see "The Alien" under letter "A", and I see "The Baby" under "B" and so on.

I had automatically synched all my content 2 days ago then I turned off the auto-sync feature and unplugged the iPod (all content was on the iPod).
Then last night I upgraded to the latest iTunes.
Then this morning i plugged in the iPod to manually add a few new songs to it.

And now the scrolling is all messed up, as I described.

P.S.
I'm not using the new sorting fields.

this is happening to me as well. everything else is fine, everything is properly tagged and everything, but the letters have gone all mad when quick scrolling. i manually manage my ipod, if thats a useful piece of info. it doesn't happen when im scrolling through artists, only when im scrolling through albums or songs.

I confirm. It only happens for Album and Songs. Everything works fine for Artists.

I asked because if you're using iTunes 7.1, you are using the sort fields ;-) When you fire up the new iTunes it reads through your library and adds "sort field" info for any song, artist, or album name that begins with "the".

Ah! I didn't know that the sorting fields were auto-filling like that.
That definitely explains how to use them.

What do you mean by Normal?

Not seeing the "T" flashing when it shouldn't?
Not seeing "The Alien" under the letter "A" ?

I just updated iTunes, if I knew it did that I wouldn't of upgraded. Crap. All of my albums that start with THE are in T anyway though, so I'm not sure if it'll make a difference.
