Hi Sorry if this is not the correct forum.
I'm getting a 30g ipod to replace my mini which started showing the dreaded "sad face" icon. Here is my problem.... Before I thought my mini was dead I updated to itunes 7. Now when I get my new ipod will I have to re-install itunes again? Will I lose my music that I already have saved? How does it work when you get a new ipod do you just connect the new ipod? Will your new ipod just automatically sync with itunes? Do you have to register the new ipod and start over? I have over 1000 songs and I don't want to lose them Please help :-) |

Don’t worry about your music getting deleted or needing to re-install. You’ll have the same library. No harm done there...
When you purchase a new iPod, and you connect it, the computer will recognize it as an unregistered iPod and will ask you if you want to register. It doesn’t matter if you do or don’t. It will also ask if you want to auto-sync (let the computer sync all the music in your library) or manual sync (you chose what to put on your iPod). I personally choose manual sync because I have some items on my library that I don’t listen to anymore and I find it easier anyways... Enjoy your new iPod! Nate |

Automatic Syncing
Even when set to update automatically, there is a way to tell iTunes not to update iPod when you connect it to your computer. Steps are different if you're using Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows. Mac OS X To start off, do not plug in the iPod yet. That comes later. First you'll log into your computer as a different user: 1. If you already have another user account on your computer that you can use, skip to step 8. Otherwise, steps 2 to 7 will create one. 2. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences. 3. From the View menu, choose Accounts for Mac OS X 10.3 or later. If you have 10.2.8 or earlier, choose Users. 4. In Mac OS X 10.3 or later, click the + button. If you have 10.2.8 or earlier, click New User. 5. Give the new user a name and short name. 6. Click the Password tab, and give the user a password. 7. Click OK, or quit System Preferences. 8. From the Apple menu, choose Log out username. 9. Click Log Out in the window that appears. 10. Click the name of the newly created user in the login window. 11. Enter the password. 12. Click Log In. Now that you're logged in as another user, it's time to get back to iTunes and your iPod: 1. Open iTunes. 2. Connect your iPod to the computer. iTunes presents a message that the iPod is linked to another music library. 3. Click the iPod button in the lower right corner of the iTunes window. 4. Click the "Manually manage songs and playlists" button. 5. Click OK. 6. Click the Eject iPod button in the lower right corner of iTunes. 7. From the Apple menu, choose Log out username. 8. Click Log Out in the window that appears. 9. Click the name of your original user in the login window. 10. Enter your password. 11. Click Log In. 12. Open iTunes. Now you can connect the iPod without iTunes automatically updating it. Optionally, you can delete the user you created by following these steps: 1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences. 2. From the View menu, choose Accounts for Mac OS X 10.3 or later. If you have 10.2.8 or earlier, choose Users. 3. Select the user from the list. 4. In Mac OS X 10.3 or later, click the - button. If you have 10.2.8 or earlier, click Delete User. 5. Follow the instructions in the message that appears. Microsoft Windows To start off, do not plug in the iPod yet. That comes later. First you'll log in as the Guest user: 1. Skip to step 7 if the Guest account on your computer is already on. If it's not, the next few steps will enable it. 2. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel. 3. Open User Accounts (one click or double-click depending on your settings). In the bottom right of the window is an icon with a suitcase labeled Guest under the heading or pick an account to change. Skip to step six if the text underneath Guest reads "Guest account is on." 4. Click Guest. 5. Click the Turn On the Guest Account button. 6. Click the X in the upper right corner to close the User Accounts window. 7. Choose Log Off from the Start menu. 8. Click Log Off. Do not click Switch User. 9. Click Guest at the login window. Now that you're logged in as the Guest user, it's time to get back to iTunes and your iPod: 1. Open iTunes. 2. Connect your iPod to the computer. iTunes presents a message that the iPod is linked to another music library. 3. Click No. 4. Click the iPod button in the lower right corner of the iTunes window. 5. Click the "Manually manage songs and playlists" button. 6. Click OK. 7. Click the Eject iPod button in the lower right corner of iTunes. 8. Choose Log Off from the Start menu. 9. Click Log Off. Do not click Switch User. 10. Click the name of your original user in the login window. 11. Enter your password. 12. Press Return. 13. Open iTunes. 14. Connect the iPod. Important: Having the guest account on allows anyone with physical access to your computer to use your computer. Optional: To turn off the Guest account: 1. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel. 2. Click (or double-click) User Accounts. 3. Click Guest. 4. Click the Turn Off the Guest Account button. 5. Click the X in the upper right corner to close the User Accounts window. Steps to manually Sync Syncing your music library on iPod is easy. By default, iTunes automatically updates iPod's music library whenever you connect iPod to your computer. iTunes transfers new songs you've added, and erases songs you've removed. You can also transfer content manually Manually managing what goes on your iPod is also helpful if you use your iPod on multiple computers or with multiple user accounts. Additionally, it also allows you to delete a song from your iTunes library, but keep it on your iPod. Make sure you have a backup copy of any media files before deleting them. Follow these steps to setup your iPod to manually transfer content. If you have iTunes 7 or later follow these instructions: 1. Connect iPod to your computer. 2. Open iTunes. 3. Select iPod in the source pane. If you don’t see iPod in the iTunes source pane, then click here if you use Windows or if you use Mac OS X click here. 4. On the Summary tab select “Manually manage music and videos” and click Apply. 5. Tip: Even though your Music, Movies, and TV Shows tabs show no checkmarks when you are in Manual mode, you can still sync content. Checking these boxes will place the iPod back into Automatic mode. If you have iTunes 6.0.5 or earlier follow these instructions: 1. Connect iPod to your computer. 2. Open iTunes. 3. Select iPod in the iTunes Source pane. If you don't see iPod in the iTunes Source pane, then click here if you use Windows or if you use Mac OS X click here. 4. Click the Options button. If you don't see this button, make sure you clicked on the iPod icon in the Source pane (see above). Tip: You can also access iPod settings through iTunes Preferences. 5. Select "Manually manage songs and playlists" and click OK. Manually copying content to your iPod After following the steps above, you can copy individual tracks and playlists from iTunes to your iPod. Just drag the track or playlist to the iPod icon in the source list. Tip: You must first import audio CD's into iTunes before you can move them to the iPod. If you're having difficulty copying songs to your iPod, click here. You can also set iTunes to automatically update iPod with selected songs or playlists only. This is useful if you only want to transfer a portion of your music library to iPod. You can't transfer songs from iPod library to iTunes 6 or earlier, but you can use iPod as a hard disk to transfer music files from one computer to another. iTunes 7 and later let You can transfer purchased content from an iPod to an authorized computer (choose File > Transfer Purchases from iPod). For more information, see iTunes 7 Help (choose Help > iTunes Help).
