How to back-up my ipod?

I would like to backup the songs on my G5 ipod to another storage device. All the songs on the ipod are not in my library (in fact my library is empty), and Itunes won't let me drag them from the ipod to the library. I'm assuming that once in the library I will be able to copy the songs from the library to another place on my computer or removable hard-drive, etc...or is there another way? Any suggestions? TIA

Thanks Honeybee. IPodAccess works great. Well worth the $19, and the most effortless online purchase I've ever made.

The link for step-by-step instructions for backing up ipod without software, however , was broken.

Cheers.

PC: sharepod
Mac: iPodDisk

both free, both work. Remember your iPod is supposed to be a portable backup of your library, not the other way around so you don't run into problems like this.
