I had a bunch of mp4 format videos on my iPod, and then when I turn on my iPod, ALL OF MY VIDEOS ARE GONE... WHY? I have no back up copies on my had drive because it takes up so much space. Is my iPod corrupt? I doubt it because I have reset the iPod like 3 times, and THIS IS STILL HAPPENING... I have NEVER used any third party programs for my iPod, JUST iTunes... Should I turn in my iPod for replacement?

I'm sorry that this happened to ya, could you give a bit more information on your setup and what you have done to fix the issue? BTW you can count your videos as good as gone.
When are people going to realize that the iPod is NOT a storage device? |

I know its not a storage device... I just want to know WHY it happened... I didn't do anything! I just added a new album to my iPod, then when I close iTunes, which lets me exit perfectly, I disconnect my iPod, then try to watch a video... BAM nothing was there... I look into my Albums list, and I find a few movie titles that I had before they disappeared... They play as songs though... I don't have any back ups of them, so Yes I accept it, they are gone for good. BUT Why do the songs stay and the videos disappear? I don't want this to happen again... It's very upsetting...
thnx... |

Hey.
After i updated to iTunes got the same exact error. all my videos show up as songs, andthe audio plays fine. i had ~280 vids, not backed up. if anyone knows how to make itunes classify a file as a video or anything else that could help i would appriciate it. i really dont feel like extracting and re syncing 280 videos, many of them full length movies when i first updated it showed that i had 35 gigs of videos, now it shows that i have none. Also, all of my videos work still in iTunes... this is VERY VERY FRUSTRATING. ![]() i believe no one would want to re-sync 280 videos ![]() please help me

yea, itunes recognizes the files exist, if i browse my iPod through itunes, i can click on a movie and it plays... its just not classified as a movie on the computer, or in the little graph screen that shows the percentages of media files you have filling the ipod... nor do they show up on the ipod as videos at all, and when a video is selected on the music menu in the ipod it plays just like a song... no video whatsoever (but full audio) (note: nothing is available on the video section [except for one music video which i downloaded from google video and put on there to make sure i still had the ability to play video])
-HELP! ![]() EDIT: Quote:
i downloaded and installed itunes 7, and plugged in my ipod once (and it recognized my full video collection) unplugged it for the day, plugged it back in, went to added a video (didnt notice all other videos were gone) go to play video, and i discovered it was he only video that i had which existed. i also never purchased a game (and never will [thats why god invented rockbox] )and its not like im tech illiterate... im pretty good when it comes to stuff like this... theres no good reason that all my videos reverted to music classification :'( ALSO: imo apple not allowing over the phone tech support after 90 days really blows...

always backup your data... your ipod is NOT a primary storage device.

I honestly wasn't trying to shut you down, because I was actually replying to Raushan who doesn't have a backup.

DrumrBoy, try the iTunes sub-forum. Those folks seem to have some ideas and prevention tips.
Luckily, I have backups of everything, but I was initially very surprised that iTunes 7 took so much control when synching. I quickly switched it to manual, but the first synch was a total mess!!!

I would try and make some video-only playlists and see if you can collect those video files and make the iPod recognize them as such, but I don't know that that would work. You may have to pull those files off of your iPod, add them to iTunes, and then put them back on the iPod.
My guess --and this is just a guess based on how iTunes 7 seems to allow more extensive video tagging-- is that the iT7 and 1.2 use a slightly different tagging system to ID the video files. And that the info for your files was not updated because the files where not in iTunes when you upgraded to 7.0. iTunes/iPods work on a model where your media collection is on your computer and part or all of it is transferred to your iPod. Not everyone uses it that way, but it does seem to be the supported configuration and the accepted configuration by Apple, so I think they make certain assumptions when they push out the updates. I hope it gets sorted out. It does seem likely that those files are still intact on your iPod. It's just a matter of getting them retagged or otherwise recognized. I know everyone says that your iPod should not be your primary file storage, but even if you choose to ignore this, I think it's good idea to make sure your iPod's library is duplicated somewhere before applying any firmware updates. I know I ended up doing a restore when 1.2 came out because of an error during the upgrade. It shouldn't happen, but, because Apple doesn't encourage you to use the iPod as your primary storage, I doubt they're going to very helpful when something messes those files, even if it was Apple's own software that did the messing up. |
