if you have a tapeplayer in the car you can get a speacial tape that has a wire which connects into the ipod headphone socket, thats what i use and it works great.

Yeah i know you can get them but i don't want a cassette player, im planning on getting a good stereo player and it has a USB socket and it says most mp3 players can be played through it but i won't to know if the ipod video will.

I doubt it. The usb port will probably only read mp3s directly.
Take the ipod to the car stereo place and try it.

If you do not have a deck... I would recommend getting a Pioneer or Alpine and a iPod adapter.

i don't think the usb input will work for the ipod. i have a sony deck that has an aux input that plugs into my ipod via the headphone jack and it works great.

well, i think that basically those car stereos just browse thru the files contained in an mp3 player as you can do thru my computer. and this is enough for "pendrive" players that usually store all the few megabytes of songs in the root folder.

anyway, given that the car stereo can supply enough power to your video ipod, given that it completes successfully the usb initialization and given that your ipod has the "use as disk" option enabled, you can still browse with the car stereo to the "\iPod_Control\Music" hidden folder in your ipod to find all the stored songs.

what you will lose (if you loaded the songs with itunes and not with one of the unofficial softwares able to rebuild the ipod's database) is the ability to access specific sets of mp3 (i.e. by author, by album, etc.), since itunes randomizes the names and the organization of the files.

so, in my opinion, the ipod-adapter -> car-stereo's-aux solution is still the best one, since you'll be able to control the played songs thru the ipod's interface.

it's likely to be a mess if it works which i doubt.

get the alpine with an adapter. my brother has it and it works well. purchased through crutchfield. they give you a harness specific to your car and comeplete instuctions on how to install specific to your car. it's very easy. we did the headunit and four speakers in less than an hour.
