2006-06-28 updater won't upgrade !

Hi there,

I have a 5G 60G, and a MacBook Pro. Up until a few months ago I had a PC, and all the music on the iPod came from it.
When I tried to upgrade the Ipod with the recent updater, it said that it can only update mac formatted iPods.
I don't keep my library on the Mac because it's pretty big (45G) and it's mostly my CD's.
Therefore I do not use Auto-sync, and I only use iTunes once in a while to add a new album or videos.

How can I overcome this situation? I want to update the iPod.

Thanks,

Dan

I just tried this method on my iPod. It works.

Download TinkerTool. Using TinkerTool, enable "Show hidden and system files," then relaunch the Finder.

Open up the iPod in the Finder and copy folder named "iPod_Control" to the desktop (or wherever). I also copied Desktop DB and Desktop DF. You should too.

This should take some time as it is copying all the Music from the iPod to the MBP. You'll need to have enough space on the MBP's drive to accomodate all the iPod's contents temporarily.

Then run iPod Updater, and when it's finished, move the versions of the items (on the iPod) that iPod Updater created that you copied to the MBP to the Trash in the Dock, then copy everything you took off the iPod back to it. After you're finished, you can disable 'Show hidden and system files' in TinkerTool.

Then, after copying everything is finished, eject the iPod and make sure that everything is on it. Then you can get rid of the stuff you copied to the desktop.

You should keep all your music in your iTunes Library on the MBP, even if you have to buy an external drive. (It's easy to move the location of the iTunes Music folder to the external drive.) You don't want to carry around the only copy of your music in your pocket; it's asking for trouble.

I think this drive would be a good choice for you.

well, like I said, 95% of the library consists of my own CD's. The ones that are on my shelf.
Say the iPod gets lost or stolen or something, I can always re-import everything.
True, it takes a little time, but I don't feel that I need a copy of my copied CD's.
Thanks anyway, now my iPod is updated.

So it's all working well, I trust.
