Is his iPod fried?

My brother just sent me this email...

Took it out of the Bose docking station this a.m. and the backlight was on, but no display. I put it back and it started playing, still no display. I took it out and the screen went blank. I tried restarting it but I get an icon that looks likethe folder with the exclamation mark. And then it goes to the Apple symbol.

I asked him if he tried doing a soft or hard reset. He said...

I tried to reset it

I dont think it's fried cuz the thing still plays when it's plugged right? But better have the Apple Tech center to have a look.
