Will Apple replace the iPod?

My friend has a 30gig 5G iPod and while at school the other day the screen cracked. She had it in her pocket and had just recently changed a song. Within the space of about 10 seconds she looked at it again and the screen was cracked. She knows she did not hit the ipod with anything or put undue pressure on the screen. Is there anyway to prove that she is not to fault here? Is there anyway to get Apple to replace this given the circumstances?

No, Apple will not replace it. They only replace iPods that have a manufacturing defect.

From the warrenty:

Quote:
This warranty does not apply: (a) to damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, misapplication, or non-Apple products; (b) to damage caused by service performed by anyone other than Apple; (c) to a product or a part that has been modified without the written permission of Apple; or (d) if any Apple serial number has been removed or defaced.
But your friend can send it in and pay to have the screen fixed.

I think if you send it to Apple it will cost quite a bit. Here are some other sites I know of that repair iPods. http://www.pdasmart.com/ipodpartscenter5g.htm and http://www.ipodresq.com/

Actually, I brought my iPod into the store today, and they found that it had a dent on the back. Before they realized that I was out of warranty, they said that they would replace it, but this time only - and if the replacement had a dent, they wouldn't fix it.

I'm assuming that this applies for the screen as well. Some employees are more lax on the rules than others, so the only way to find out is to go to the store and let a Genius look at it.

It's not like the employees are all attorneys or anything - they won't really care if it's your fault or not.

getting an appointment with a Genius can be tedious and time consuming- i know at our local apple store if you don't have an applecare warranty you can't reserve a slot online and have to wait to see if someone doesn't show up.

99% of the time it's someone who turned on their hold switch and says their ipod froze. Hence why it's a pain to actually get help.

You can always try but store employees are not known for being too generous with the return policy.

If your iPod is under warranty and they decide to replace it, then yes.

If out of warranty and/or they don't decide to replce it for you, then no.

yikes, $130 USD, thats kinda steep. Ah well. Unfourtunetly she was having problems with dead pixels in her screen before she just never took it back, so that is kind've a lost opportunity I guess.

Wait, if she was under warranty and it wasn't her fault. Then apple should and would replace the iPod wouldn't they?

This would be a manufacturing defect and have her take it back and see what they can do about it.

30gb iPod photo- has been sent to my aunt. She loves it, and is very careful with it, as I've heard. Hopefully I can get it back when the battery dies or the hard drive fails.

30gb iPod video- just got it as of 12/13/05 YAY!!!

One thing with Apple is when you go for their tech support, you never need your receipt. They don't look at it. Since you registered your iPod when you bought it or set it up with iTunes (hopefully), everytime they type in the serial number, your information comes up with a history of all things that you've done to it (and have had to go to Apple to fix that is) is there - thus eliminating the need for a receipt.

If it's under warranty, just go and pray they'll replace it.

For the past 4 times I went to the Apple Store to get my iPod fixed, I brought my receipts but never needed them. I guess I won't bring them starting the 5th time...of course - there hopefully won't be a 5th time.
