Using iTunes At Work

I recently started a new job and tried to install iTunes on my work computer, but it wouldn't work because I don't have admin privilages.

I don't have a home computer, so my work computer is the only way I can copy my CD's to my iPod, plus I would like to be able to listen to my iPod through my computer.

Is there anyway I could install iTunes and get around the admin thing, or is there another piece of software I could install that would allow me to play and copy music

nope. Unless you have the admin login and pass. Have you considered investing in a computer?

Well, why don't you just enable your iPod as an external hardrive, create a folder in it, put you favorite mp3 files in there and the play tham via the media player installed on your work computer?

Does RealPlayer 10.5 require admin privileges as well? It has a nice AAC encoder, if that's what you require.

No way to get around it, unless you have permission from the administrator.

You should either buy yourself a computer as JMG suggested, or find your admin and ask really nicely. However, since this is a work computer I would keep in mind that anything you put on it is the property of the company you work for, and if your access doesn't allow you to install your own programs then that's a good indication your company wants you to use your computer for work purposes only. However, I don't know who you work for or what you do, so good luck.

Either you should ask a fellow employee if they know or ask the boss to install iTunes. I'm pretty sure they'd say yes, I mean, it's only iTunes right?

If not, I recommend you buy your own computer.

Sure, it's only iTunes. Just like it's "only" Kazaa, Limewire, Morpheus, Napster, etc., etc.

iTunes is no different from any other program. In fact, I'd say it's worse than other programs because you can fill up a company's hard drive space with free and purchased music and video files.

I realize that iTunes does fill up the hard drive. But wouldn't putting his ipod in manual syncing and deleting his stuff from iTunes help to the hard drive thing?

it wouldn't back up his music, but it at least is a solution to the hdd filling up.

That is true. However, for most administrators and IT departments "it's just a program" doesn't justify anything. Some companies want to control what's on their computers/network so tightly that every program that is installed must go through rigorous configuration, security testing and certification. I'm not saying that's what the OP's company does, but there are many reasons why a company doesn't want its employees just installing anything they want on company computers - including not wanting their employees to be wasting company time doing personal stuff that has nothing to do with company business.
