First and foremost, I've found this site a few days ago, and I've been lurking around trying to find more reasons to buy an iPod and just to get a general feel for it...
Questions: 1) Do you guys know where I can get the best price on an iPod (10-15-20 GB)? 2) Does the iPod come with a USB 2.0 cable? I have an extra one at home (General USB 2.0 will work right?)... 3) I will plan to use it on the way to school (45 mins) and back home. And then mostly in the car (2003 Civic EX w/Factory HU) will I have a problem with the 8hr. battery life associated with the 3G iPod? 4) Will there be extravagant firmware updates for the 3G iPod? Or should I wait for the 4G? 5) It says the iPod has 10GB (for example) before its formatted, so how much does it have after first format? 6) I will be ripping tracks off CDs and some mp3s (only have 50 on my HD) what program should I go with? About number 3, I read a DIY for the install into my Civic, and I plan on doing it through the CD-Changer input, any sugggestions on what I should do and what I need? I want to stay away from the FM modulator (low sound quality). I'm running a WinXP Pro OS, with 38GB HD (plans to upgrade to 80GB), 512 RAM, 2.52 GHz P4. And I'd like to keep things "pocket-friendly" because I'm a unemployed HS student with a bills (Nextel, Cable Modem). Thanks guys! |

You are correct. USB cable does not come with the iPod. About $20 from Apple. The Apple cable has got TWO ends (USB and firewire). So, when you transfer music to your iPob via USB, you can get power from the Firewire cable...attached the AC adapter (included w/iPod). Note that Firewire cards are running about SAME price as the USB cable from Apple. This might be a good option for you ... Hope this helps!

...to your other Q's
1. My 20GB iPod shows 18.5GB capacity 2. I get about 6 to 6.5 real-use hours from my 8hr battery 3. I use MC9 and LOVE for libbrary management. There are TONS of other (free) apps that will do the simple rip & copy to iPod task 4. Your current USB cable will not work with iPod. The iPod connector-end is proprietary to Apple

Thanks, I would like to get a 20 GB iPod, if I can afford it around Christmas time...
Does anyone know when will the 4G be released? Should I go with a 10 or 20 GB? I'm leaning to 20 but I'm afraid of the price... |

Get the biggest that you can afford. No one knows if there will be another generation ipod, all this talk of a fourth gen is pure speculation. Don't waste your life on what might happen. Get an ipod now and enjoy it.

I think I might go with a 3G 20GB iPod...
Gotta check eBay, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.. Any ideas on the best deal? I want to get a serivce plan just in case anything happens, I don't want to pay 400$ and then be SOL because of a lil accident... BTW, I'm so addicted to this forum, I find myself frequenting it more than HowardForums (Cell Phones) and I have over 2000 posts there.

I just sent you a PM asking if that was you from Howard Forums and then I saw this thread so I guess I was right.
I think you can take an ipod that yuo get from ebay or someplace like that and take it to CompUSA and they will put the TAP warranty thing on it even though you did not buy it there. The other places do it too but I think you have to get it there. My Gen 2 has a 2 year warranty, or more I do not remember, for about $40 I think it was. It will be more if you get the Gen 3 20 gb because it sells for more. |

Also, I wouldn't even think of getting the 10GB 3G. It's $300 for just the iPod. For $400 you get double the capacity (20GB) and a dock and a case and a remote. If you bought those extras separately for the 10GB you'd be paying about the same price as the 20GB.
I just bought mine this past weekend. I searched a lot of places and the best price I found was Amazon. But, I bought mine at Best Buy just because I wanted to get the 4 year PSP. They said that there is nothing on them that they can attempt to repair so if anything happens to it within the 4 years they will just give me a new one.

Thats what I thought too, because its a good deal to get the Remote, the Dock, Carrying Case and all that plus the additional space.
