Question iPOD Charged but dies shortly after use

I've checked the faqs and still haven't found a explaination.

Well i've fully charged my mini and shortly after using it... the ipod shuts off or i get some wierd message regarding using a properly charged battery.

I know about the reset but my question is what causes this to happen? is it software or hardware related?

the mini is under 1 yr can it be replaced even though for some strange reason i can't replicate it at the apple store.

They've done the battery test after restoring it and have concluded nothing is wrong. However, this happens quite a bit but can't figure how to replicate it for the Geniuses at the Apple Store.

Regards
