I have a 30 GB, and I have no problems at all, but I want my backlight on, whenever I want to!

What do you guys think I should do?

I would suggest making sure you have all of your files backed up and copy the Sysinfo file to your desktop before you go and try editing it. Good Luck! Here are the instructions from the previous page:

Put the ipod in harddisk mode

edit the file (hidden folder and file)

\iPod_Control\Device\SysInfo

Replace the line that have the word "buildID" with this line:

buildID: 0x05108000 (6.1)

run iPod Updater 2005-11-17.exe or iPod Updater 2005-10-12.exe (both have the same software version for ipod video 5th generation)

iPod Updater 2005-11-17.exe can be downloaded from:

http URL
appldnld.m7z.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/ww/win/061-2225.20051128.PDWnw/iPodSetup.exe

Select upgrade (with this options you dont delete the songs or videos inside the ipod, if you select restore you lose all the content inside the ipod)

After that, you have your IPOD with version 1.0 and you can watch your videos without a problem again
Thank you SO MUCH... not just to you but to everyone else here who came up with this fix.

I was super stressing with this problem, but this fix worked like a charm.

I'll definitely check in here before EVER doing any apple updates again!!!

One thing I wanted to add... I'm using Windows, and at first I had a hard time figuring out how to "edit" the SysInfo file... when I clicked on it, my computer asked me what program I wanted to open it with. Turns out all I needed to do was open it with the generic text viewer and edit the text in there. Just a "heads up" to any one else trying to use this VERY EFFECTIVE rollback for the 1.1 travesty.

Thanks again ilounge forums!!!!

Nero recode

I have a black 60 gb that I ran the firmware update on. I also used videora and I also had the same bug that everyone else is having.

Someone from this forum posted that Nero Recode's files will work. I tried this, and I'm posting this message just to let people know that it DOES work!

So I've been ripping my files with decrypter, and converting with nero recode and it's working flawlessly. I figured if they work with recode now, chances are they'll still work after all the subsequent updates that are sure to follow, so I went ahead and bought it.

During my download of the new update it froze and my ipod now has a white screen and won't shut off or respond. The 5 r's didn't work, anyone have a suggestion?

Exclamation

I just thought I'd add something I haven't seen yet.

I've got several videos (TV show episodes, so 20-25 minutes each) that are only about 30-50mb each. They all play flawlessly in the 1.0 firmware. I don't know how they were encoded, but I thought this was a valid point, since none of them are very large files, and that was one of the common criteria listed in the first post.

Thankfully, downgrading the firmware allowed me to play all of my files again. Good luck to everyone else.

This is step by step what I did (on a Windows system)

Step 1: Make your ipod a hard disk.
Open your ipod options in itunes and click the option making your ipod an external drive.

Step 2: Make sure you activate "Show Hidden Files and Folders" on your computer.

Step 3: Go into "My Computer" (with your ipod connected) and open up your ipod by clicking on that drive.

Step 4: Select the "iPod_Control" folder and then select the "Device" subfolder.

Step 5: There is a file in there called "SysInfo" -- open it.

Step 6: When I did this, my computer asked me what I wanted to open it with... I chose the generic text reader. When it opened, there were several lines of text, I found where it said "buildID" and then I replaced the number that was there with: 0x05108000 (6.1).

Step 7: Close this text file. It will ask you if you want to save, and yes, you do.

Step 8: Now run an older updater, either Updater 2005-11-17.exe or iPod Updater 2005-10-12.exe. You may have this in your ipod folder (probably under "Program Files") or you can load it using the software that came with your ipod. When it loads, make sure you click "UPDATE" instead of "RESTORE"

That should do the trick. If you still have problems, please state what specifically they are and I'm sure that I, or someone here with more knowledge than me, can help.

Oh my God, I never thought I'd be happy to see the crappy 1.0 software again. Thank you MrMonkeyFingers and Danny iPod, you helped me a lot.

Do Danny iPod's step-by-step revert! It works!

Angry Time to return iPods?

So, let’s not get too confident that an update is even coming.
In that case, I'd appreciate any information anyone can give me about what I have to do to force Apple to accept a return of my 5G 60GB iPod. I've had it less than 30 days, and it worked fine until the firmware "upgrade". And even downgrading back to 1.0 didn't fix what they broke. That's Apple's problem, not mine, and if I have to get the Attorneys General involved of both my state and California's, I'll be more than happy to do so.

If you make enough of a fuss, they may just take it back (but since you've opened it, you'd have to pay the restocking fee or whatever it is).

Personally, I'm reallly glad I kept mine in its packaging for couple days after buying it. Initially, it was just so I had a few days to determine whether I really need the 60GB, but when the firmware came out about 3 days after I got the iPod, so I decided to leave it the way it was for a week or so to see what Apple would do. When that time came and Apple hadn't even acknowledged the problem existed, I brought it back and told them exactly why I was returning it.

Apple's handling of customer service and product releases doesn't particularly impress me; I doubt I'll go with an Apple product again. From releasing the recent iTunes w/ encoding ability after tricking alot of people into buying Quicktime Pro to this substandard, seeminly poorly tested firmware release; they seem to rely primarily on their brand to sell the product, and hope people ignore the blatant flaws and inadequacies. I've had enough of them.

I been reading this thread for awhile and have not upgraded my iPod to 1.1 may not bother.

Read on another thread in the library select the Video(s) right click and select "Convert Selection for iPod" . Said it fixed all video playback issues. Anybody try this ?

Really in Canada there is no Video Content available from iTunes, legally converting DVDs I own to my iPod is my only option.
