Question Which one USB or FIREWIRE?

Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. Hello,

Recently got a ipod video and on my older PC I only have a USB 1.o (older version). I'm deciding whether to upgrade to USB 2.0 or to a Firewire. Any suggestions on what I should use?

Thanks in advance!

You have no choice but USB with the 5G.

Sorry I forgot that new iPods are all USB now. I guess there's no converters for FIREWIRE use right?

How much faster if so is Firewire anyway?

It's not. USB 2.0 is faster than the original FireWire standard.

It is common knowledge Firewire ultimately is faster that USB 2.0 despite being rated as 80 mbps slower because it puts less of a burden on the CPU and the device.

I've also read that firewire is faster even though it's rated slower. All those figures are maximum transfer rates - for sustained transfer rates I've read that firewire is faster. Unfortunately USB is only supported for the newer iPods to transfer data, firewire can still be used to charge and actually has a higher voltage so might charge the iPod faster. Not positive on that front however.

I just remembered - I think I also read somewhere that apple is doing away with firewire as well since USB is a more universally supported standard.

The firewire standard is slowly going away. All of the new macs and camcorders are moving to USB 2.0. So, I would go USB 2.0.

Another option would be to get a PCI card with both firewire and usb inputs.

Kinda related to the topic....My laptop only has usb 1.1 ports...is it possible to obtain 2.0 ports through a pc card or something (something similar to an external wireless card).

Predz - If you've got a PCMCIA slot (PC card slot) free you can get USB2 adaptors to fit.

Oh ok - thanks....I've read at some places that said it will still act as 1.1, others say it will actually be 2.0. Thanks for confirmation.

there is a dock to firewire converter but it doesnt work with video or nano which is stupid. you dont need firewire really to transfer the small amount of songs in last ipods but they still had it. then when they make a video ipod that uses lots of big transfers they take off firewire.
